as a matter of fact the money you save on not getting a stock filter should be spent on a coolant filter in my opinion

A buddy of mine lived out in Cali a few months ago, didn't own a diesel but he changed out his stock intake to a cheap "cold air" intake and boy did he say they raised hell about it.

73stang- i have the AFE intake. mine is a sealed box. i think yours is more of an open air type filter. do you hear alot of air noise when you get on the throttle?

The C&L intake on my 2004 Mach1 doesn't change the actual emissions, either (THEORECTICALLY). What the $#%@ does that have to do with the law?

If you bothered to read the law, both the EPA and CARB follow the same premise:

Manufacturers have to warrant emission systems for a certain period of time per the law. Each vehicle and each variation is tested and approved. That means you just don't approve a Mustang. You approve a V6 auto, a V6 manual, a V8 auto, a V8 manual, a Shelby GT 500 (manual only), and now a Boss 302 (manual only).

The EPA tests those engine/vehicle/drivetrain/combinations and the manufacturers warrant their emissions performance for X years and Y miles.
Aftermarket parts were never part of the design, testing or warranty. Only the original systems with all original parts were EPA tested and approved. If you want to change a part, CARB has a process where you prove it doesn't affect emission performance to get an exemption.

You statement that an an intake doesn't change emissions is not correct.

I had my Mach 1 dyno tuned by Danny Swanson after installing an C&L intake. C&L claimed it would require retuning. My car was running rich. Two friends with identical cars and intakes came up lean on the same dyno. (We all had O2 bungs welded-in in the same locations for tuning purposes. )

If you read the links I posted, you'll see a note about certain incompatibilities with then current (2009) CARB test equipment and some CAN ECUs. I did not research any updates, but rest assured, as test equipment is updated you can expect to have your truck hooked up because it's already the law.

I was a planning commissioner in a southern California city. California law required residents in cities over a certain population to recycle. The garbage company had to provide every homeowner with THREE GARBAGE CANS. One for regular garbage (whatever the hell that means) and the other two for recyclables.

At the time, the law had no provision requiring the garbage company to recycle, so for years the idiot residents mindlessly separated their garbage and paid more not even realizing that their trash wasn't separated and recycled. you'd think one, just one of these morons would have noticed all three of their eco friendly save the earth from global warming trash cans were collected by and dumped into the same *&^&^*? garbage truck.

People were shocked, shocked when I presented photographic evidence at a commission meeting.

My parents kidnapped me from Chicago to L.A. when I was a kid. I left that liberal hell hole for Wyoming after their deaths. After six years up here, I still go to city hall or the county courthouse and ask, "What kind of permit do I need to.....?"

And the answer invariably is, "You don't need a permit for that."

My friend is an FFL and has a book containing each state's firearms laws. The California section is about 3/8th inch thick. The Wyoming laws are 2 pages long. (And, we just got rid of another useless law: As of July first a permit is no longer needed to carry concealed, so those vtwo pages may shrink to one.)

Just checked, and this particular filter I have is issued under C.A.R.B. E.O. #D-392-24 for part number 21-8104.
Does that guarantee that I will pass (so long as the other requirements are met)?

As for the sound that it makes, its not quite audible when in the cab. But when the hood is popped and the engine revs up the whoosing air sound is clear.
It's up to you to make sure your approved filter is identified as such. Call up the manufacturer and have them send you a sticker with the EO number on it. The guy doing the inspection will look for it. You can't really expect him to know all the different CARB approved parts out there.

I read the links you posted back in 2009. It's old news and has been discussed on this forum quite a bit. The "certain incompatibilies" include the vehicle that we are here reading about in this forum. When I had my truck tested last year, the smog check station owner told me that the state is planning on adding particulate mattter testing and OBD II testing in the future. Currently it's just as I stated.

When I bought my truck it had a K&N FIPK on it. I found a stock intake on e-bay and put that on. It came with the used filter but I picked up a new one from the local dealership I deal with for $46.

Actually that argument doesn't work in this case. In TN if you can't show proof about an aftermarket intake they can fail you, regardless of it being gas or diesel. Now that may or may not be the case everywhere, but don't think that it doesn't happen. I am not saying that they will fail you, but they can or atleast make you come back with proof.

This is why I want to move to Texas someday. That is where my truck came from and is where it belongs, not shackled up here in California.

As for my filter, it has the CARB EO printed sticker on it, so I am hoping that will work and I don't have to buy the OEM intake.

I recently had to replace the intake minder, the guage that tells you when to buy a new filter. It just blew apart one day for no reason.
