I have a 89 f150 efi 4.9. I got codes pulled today and the EGR is bad and the truck was running lean but the lean code went away. I plan on replacing the EGR valve soon. ( Almost done with the semester of college). Is there anything I need to look out for before I go taking things apart? Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
wel one thing you can try is pulling th egr out and buy a good degreaser/cleaner and pray it out nice and good and clean up all the gunk you can and it may help out a bit..make sure all the cleaner dries out before installing it though..it only takes about 30 min to do a good job..
Start spraying the two bolts that go through the egr and into the intake with wd40 pb-blaster etc now, also the large nut that connects to the air pipe. the bolts holding the egr are steel and the inatke is aluminum, and they tend almost fuse togeather. The worst case scenario plan to pull the intake and drill and tap for new egr bolts.
It can't hurt, another thing with the bolts and air pipe nut, before putting them back togeather spend the extra $5.00 and coat everything with antisieze incase you ever have to do it again, any time you have dissimilar metals touching steel aluminum etc they may and will bond to eachother if not coated.

I found time to replace it today. It was a little difficult to take off but other than that I didn't have any problems until I dove it down the road. I didn't think it would make my truck run any different. Under light acceleration it feels like someone is bouncing the petal. If you get on the gas it does not do it. When I got up to speed and held it, it was alright for a little bit then it would feel like someone was bouncing the petal. I tried it on a newly paved road and my truck usually rides smooth on it. The petal has a little more resistance to it too. Also I noticed that there was a little bit of smoke coming out of the hood. I stopped and opened the hood and it was the egr valve. I think it was burning some of the antisieze that i got on it but not sure.
What do you mean when you say "it feels like someone is bouncing the pedal?" The pedal feels that way, or the engine speed seems to be behaving as if somebody were doing that?

When I get up to speed and hold let's say 30 It is as if you were going down the road and you just started taping the pedal fast and making the truck feel like it's bouncing. Sorry its kind of hard to explain.

Sounds to me like the "infamous egr stumble" and/or a vacuum leak.
I corrected my stumble by putting a fender washer with a 1/8" hole in it in between the egr valve and the tube nut.
And BTW, the smoke you saw was most likely the anti-seize burning off.
Mine does it every I time re-apply it.
There's TONS of info on this site about the EGR bucking/stumble issue.
