I think I will opt for a in bed 45 gal tool box/fuel tank. If you add that to the 26 gal tank of the truck comes up with a cool 71 gal. Easy to hook up gravity feed makes it a quick project and the box will move from truck to truck. The tool box is only 6.5" deep but I am sure I can work with it. Any reviews out there for an in bed tank....
I have owned two RDS tanks. The first was a fuel/tool and the one I just got last week was just a fuel. I think they are great. The people at RDS are very helpful. I think their tanks are very well made and an excellent value. The first I had hooked up as a gravity feed, and this one is on an Airtex pump. You will not be disappointed with them. Nothern Tool handles RDS, they carry a few in their stores and more on their web site. Good luck with your choice.
Going to Chattanooga on Thursday and they have a Northern and I will go take a look. On the internet they are half the price if thr inside the frame tanks. Have to do something to extend the range..... Let's hope I will be able to afford to fill the tanks in the future.....
I purchased a RDS about a month ago. I ended up buying it from Nationwide Wholesale Direct. That is one of the dealers that RDS has on their website that they recomend buying from. They beat Northern Tool on price pretty bad.
I bought the model number 72743 - 60 gallon with toolbox and I very happy with it. Put it in a 2011 F250 with a short box and it fits perfect. Have my B&W Companion in there and there are no clearance issues.
I think you only lose 1/2' in the depth of the tool box. If 47 gal is good 60 gal must be better. I do not want a 60' box because I have an Extang Trifecta and I need some room on the sides to fasten the front of the Extang. Noone needs to see what is in the box when I am not towing.... I have to check out the 60...
Interested in getting one of these but curious if the can fit under a hard folding Ford tonneau cover? And if so, will the little overhang at the cab end of the toneau prevent the toolbox cover from opening?
My 04 F250 with the 6.0 got 10 mpg when towing my 33' Alumascape. On our trips from the Kansas to Travis AFB I really appreciated the flexibility of the extra fuel. Now, with the new truck I have 100 gals of fuel and even more flexibility. I know where the lowest diesel prices are from here to there as I have made this same trip 6 times and keep a ledger of prices and locations. Like I said I've used both delivery systems and both have worked flawlessly. I have an Aerometer fuel gauge mounted in the upper corner of the windshield that gives me my aux tank levels. The Airtex pump is hooked to upfitter switch #3. I used Wix 33123 fuel filter/water separator and Wix mounting base. I bought my 12 V fuel shutoff from danmarc.com. All of this stuff is mounted to the steel frame of my flatbed and the fuel line then runs back to the filler neck of the aft stock tank. It took a while to make the mounting hardware to mount the components, but certainly wasn't difficult. Like I said you will be happy with RDS quality and price, I can't say enough good things about their products. I can't answer the questions about the bed covers and the tanks. I would be glad to help anyone with how I did my install. Good luck and happy driving and towing to all!!!
I used the gravity system on my 2000 7.3 and loved it. Are there any issues with installing a gravity system on my 2011 like throwing a code or messing up the mpg information?
I've been wondering if my tank and fuel pump will cause any codes. I just got the tank installed this week, I know it all works but havn't transferred more than a test amount as my aft axle tank is full. I've read to let the stock tank get to around 1/4 before transferring. I guess I'll find out soon. Maybe someone can help both of us.
I have to admit I don't know why it would cause a code. I believe I read that you just don't want to keep the stock tank full all the time. Let fuel level go down a substantial amount before transferring. Something about the stock tank remaining full for too long a time. I'm not sure if I have that right or not. Anyhow, time will tell. I only have 700 miles on the truck, so now that I finally have everything done to it I can start getting some miles on it.
I was thinking the computer might get confused if fuel level was increasing while in motion? I would be interested if that happens or not as I would like to ad an auxiliary tank to my 11.
I used the gravity feed system on my 04 diesel and I never worried about a computer getting confused. It worked great for 7 years. I'm sure some of the guys that use the Transfer Flow system can give us some input.
