Hello all and thanks for the help in advance. I have been lurking on this site for quite some time and have learned a whole lot. Anyway to the real issue, I will be changing the fluid in the transfer case in our 10 month old Super Duty with the V10. The owners manual says that it takes two quarts of Ford transfer case fluid with no specs, so what is it and what top quality fluid can I buy off the shelf to replace it? I will also change the differential fluid (there are specs in the owners manual for this) add friction modifier for the limited slip and install a Ford factory aluminum finned differential cover. Anybody know what the torque specs are for the bolts that hold the aluminum differential cover on?
Thanks again,Bob
Just use 2 qts of ATF, thats what most people use. I used Amsoil Synthetic ATF in mine without any problems. You dont need to torque the rear cover bolts down, just snug them up first then go back around and tighten them down by hand.
I apoligize for the senior moment and not remembering if this conversation just took place here or a different forum.
A couple of weeks ago there was a lot of discussion around this issue. I just came back from Ford, with Mercon V for my trans. I was told by a tech to use Mercon V in the transfer case, the parts guy didn't know anything about the specific transfer case fluid.
On the back of the Ford Mercon V bottle, it states "Do not use in transfer cases".?????
Does anybody know why?
I am changing mine (tc) next couple of weeks, just not sure with what!
Tom.
More specs on your truck would help. From your post you may have a 2010 MY or you may have a 10 yr. old truck thats 10 months old to you.
Parts guy may know his stuff or may not. Its better to have a part number for him for sure.
Here is a little treasure :http://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricant...df/catalog.pdf
Best of luck.
The Ford part number for the correct fluid will be in the Owner's Manual. At some point, Ford changed from ATF to their own fluid. ATF may work, or it may royally screw up the transfer case.
Yeah, and that seems to be the source of the confusion. Ford changed to Merc V, said that is great for trans and ps, but not for transfer case. As I understand the older Mercon was fine and recomended. A whole lot of people have been running around with atf in their transfer cases, no problem.
I am going to call another dealer tomorrow and see what they say. I am in Houston so a few choices.
FWIW. I went through this on my 3/4 ton Chevy and had to update the pump to prevent a leak in the t-case. Many who were changing pumps were switching to a regular gear case oil and doing away with the atf's and were noticing a smoother feel in the drive line. I was always concerned with cross contamination issues but never had any when I switched to a 10w-30. jm2c
