I currently have a 2009 Chevy 2500 crew/short/4x4 Duramax LTZ that I really like, but I am driving 6000 miles per month and it is losing value faster than my loan amount is. It seems like now is a good time to get out while it still has good value. My first diesel was a 2000 F-250 cc/sb/4x4 Lariat and I loved that truck. In 2005 I traded it for a 2005 Ram 3500 SRW Cummins. Then I went to a 2006 Chevy, 2007.5 Chevy and now a 2009 Chevy. The Silverado is a nice truck, but the time has come to change things up a bit. I have always liked the Ford truck, but the 6.0L issues kept me away. When I started looking at trucks I was thinking about a 2011 Ford until I found this 2010 King Ranch cc/sb/4x4 with 30k miles at what seems to be a good price. I drove the truck on Saturday and was very impressed with the ride comfort, but after reading these forums it seems that people are still having issues with the 6.4L. My biggest fear in all honesty is the bad mileage people are reporting. I am driving around 6000 miles per month for work and get paid $0.25 per mile without a trailer at current fuel prices. I have to average 16.5mpg to break even but I don't want to lose money to own a Ford. My Duramax will get 17-18mpg at 74mph and will go up to almost 20mpg at 64mph. I tried my two closest dealers for an OASIS report on this truck and both said unless I own the truck there is nothing they can do for me. I recall a while back on here a member helped me with one, but I can't seem to find that anymore. Any input you can provide on this truck would be appreciated. Thank you
I would only recommend you compare apples with apples, that is, gear ratios, tire size, etc., when you compare the two trucks; GM vs Ford. I have a 2009 6.4l F250 and have never had 17-18 MPG at the speeds you are quoting, I have had 15 MPG using diesel additive while traveling 900 highway miles at 70-75mph w/3:73 and 20" tires. I have a friend with a GM truck and he gets numbers consistent with yours, 13%-20% better mileage than the Ford. If that is your ONLY criteria, I'd pass up the Ford. Despite this, I would--without a doubt--buy another Ford considering style, comfort, and overall personal preference.
I have an 09 250 kingranch and 42k miles on it. Have had no issues as of yet. I don't usually haul anything. When I do its not a big load just my boat or a 12x6 trailer with some A/C equipment on it. Doubt if it goes past 5k in weight. I really like my truck but the mileage you are seeing now I have never gotten from my 6.4. The best I ever got was 17mpg going about 60-65 on a trip to Florida. In town I average 12-13mpg. I regularly log into FTE to check what other 6.4 owners are experiencing. What worries me is what will happen when the extended warranty expires. Since lately I been hearing of 10k repairs and trouble with ford or the dealer honoring the warranty. I really would like to keep my first diesel till it no longer rolls but the mpgs, diesel pricing and warranty issues are making me think of going to trade for a gaser. Don't get me wrong I love the truck (my first ford) but thinking of owning this truck without warranty is making me nervous. Especially since I only drive the truck usually on the weekends to take the family out, go fishing or hunting.
You simply will not get that same kind of fuel economy with the 6.4 as equipped from the factory. The best I've gotten with my truck is about 18.25 mpg at 67 miles per hour and that's for a 2010 F250 supercab Powerstroke. If you remove the DPF and put in a tune you might get closer to what you're getting with your Duramax, but then you lose your warranty. I think that the 6.4 is a good engine from my albeit limited experience, however it is not known for good fuel economy. Since I have a vehicle provided by my employer for commuting, I don't drive my truck often so fuel economy is a non factor for me (I put 5,000 to 7,000 miles per year on my truck). Your needs may be different and I don't know that you'd always be guaranteed to break even on your mileage reimbursement.
I can get about 17 @ 70 mph with mine. I have 3.73 gears, but as everyone else has indicated I would not count on it being consistant.
I wonder if a F150 with the V6 would be better for you. that ecoboost is still able to tow quite a load. Not sure what your needs are when towing though.

As stated before the 6.4L engine is not the preferred choice for great fuel economy. Tuned the right way it can do okay, but that comes at the expense of the warranty. I loved my 6.4L truck as much as everyone here, but with your job it probably doesn't make sense.
If you can swing the higher cost I'd recommend the new 6.7L trucks. Mine is a crew cab short box 4x4 with 3.55s, and I am averaging around 19 MPGs. Most of us with SRW trucks can get into the 20s depending on circumstances, and will likely get better fuel economy than your Chevy does.
Thank you for all of the replies! I drove a 2011 King Ranch and it was an amazing truck. I always thought the Chevy seats were comfortable until I drove that truck. I can afford the 2011 price, but was hoping to save the $7000 difference if possible. The 2010 has 30K miles, sunroof, NAV and is selling for $41,990. the 2011 has 20K miles, sunroof and no NAV and is selling for $48,990. The 2011 also had a check engine light on and there was a noticeable grinding in the rear end while turning and leaving the dealer's parking lot. I understand that both are still under warranty and those issues will be resolved, but there is still some concern. All of the comments about 6.4L mileage echo what I have already heard and unfortunately mileage is a big concern with my current employment situation. Looks like I might have to look at the 2011 or something else at this point. Thank you again for the input!!!!
lol . J/K. Get whatever you like. I was pulling a tool trailer with an air compressor, welder, loaded with tools, couple of truck tires and some other crap. Plus that was all local, no hwy.
Ok, i'm trying to convert the fuel consumption I'm getting with a new truck 6.4L 2010 F-350. I'm using 17 liters/ 100 kilometers, that converts to 4.49 Gallons/ 62 Miles. So that's 13.8 mpg? And that's 90% hwy driving, not hauling anything.
