engine trouble

So I live in Pennsylvania and we recently had a really bad storm. My car was stuck on a flooded road for a bit and I cannot get it started. It's a 96 explorer 4.0 and I did my best to dry all fuses and connections, smack the starter, which does hammer but engine won't turn over. I'd like to be optimistic and not think the engines ruined, but anyway all help would be greatly appreciated.

You might try removing all spark plugs an crank the engine over a few times to see if there's water in them. Was the flood water up to or over the exhaust tail pipe? You might have filled the exhaust with water. A quick test for this could be to remove the Sensor 1 oxygen sensors then see if the engine will start (with the spark plugs installed again).

plugs, intake. Crank while the plugs are out. Hopefully even though it was hydrolocked there is no damage.

If it runs don't shut it off for a couple of hours. You want it to get good and hot, get all the condensation out of it.

Water in the intake!.........

Do not even attempt to start until you pull all sparks and remove the water from cylinders (hydro locked).......
  • Sparks out..
  • fuel pump relay out...
  • crank till no spray from cylinders,
  • teaspoon of oil in each cylinder crank again...
  • install new plugs, FP relay and
  • start......

If you have the tools, then put a big socket and breaker bar on the vibration dampner and see if you can hand crank the motor over.

Vibration dampner is upfront, big pulley on the crankshaft.

You have good battery?

How long did this engine sit with water in it...? Ring might be stuck to cylinder walls.. Johnson bar on main crank and wiggle back and forth till free... Check for seized starter motor.... might ease load if you remove all accessory belts....

yes as long as you can get a socket on their and turn it over. All you want to do is break it loose. and then try the starter.

Plugs still out and a squirt of oil in each cylinder.

possibly, unless the starter is also frozen. So you may end taking that off also.
