Hey guys, I have a problem. I am pulling engine on 68 f100. It has a 302 w/c4 tranny. I wanted to pull tranny and rebuild it. I thought it could be done through bottom of truck. I was wrong, I ended up pulling engine and then tranny. My concern is reinstalling them. Am I going to be able to do them as one? With the front cross member being one big piece, am I going to have enough clearance to put engine and tranny in as one? I have a leveler for the hoist which should help. It just seemed like a lot of troube getting the tranny out by itself.. Any help will do. Thanks Hooty1. PS, yes the engine is stripped down the fan off radiator out all that.....
if you take the hood off you should be able to put them in as one unit , i have done this with a 289 and a 65 mustang and there's a lot more room with the trucks .
Have someone hold the back of the transmission in place so it doesn't swing around and hit anything. Also may be needed to guide the transmission under the tunnel.
Yes, there is plenty of room to pull or put them back in as a unit, especially a small 302. But like limegold said, have someone guide the unit in or out. I have heard of a swinging engine/tranny combo taking out the windshield. If you want, pull the whole doghouse for more space.
Hooty, Sounds like you are working with a truck that was a 3 spd from the factory. You have to remove the cross member to remove an auto tranny. The smaller 3spds are smaller and will come out. You can cut & remove the rivets replacing them with bolts.
I have not done this but I have heard the rivets are a little stubborn to remove.
