I have the extended range fob. And yes, you will carry a small second fob. Why doesn't Ford install just include the long range capability as the option, who knows?! The upgrade kit is easy to install. I bought it because when I go hunting, I can fire up the rig quite a distance out and can get into a warm cab when I get back.

The upgraded one does require a second Fob. However, it is also twice the price. So ask yourself how far away you need to be able to start your truck from.

About a 1000 feet

With my hunting gear on, it takes me about 15 minutes to go that distance when I come off of the mountain in a foot of snow. By then I'm overheated and pull off all the thermal layers to get into the truck. Can't tell you the number of times I sat there freezing my buns off waiting for the truck to produce heat.

People have different motivations for buying things. How many HD trucks do you think are out there that live the majority of their lives as daily drivers?

I can barely even start it from my bedroom with the standard key. I'm thinking of getting the extended range and just keeping the fob in my house. I mainly use it in the morning anyways. Yesterday I couldn't even get it to work 10' from my truck!

Since I have both fobs I have been able to compare them. The regular fob does have a harder time in the house. The extended remote will too if you are behind too many drywalls. On a pure line of sight comparison, using a range finder, I found the best I could do with the factory remote was around 300 feet. The best with the extended has been just a little over 1100 feet. Since all of my extended starts are from outside, anything over 800 feet serves my needs.

I know there are other remote starters that use cell phones, etc. You will need to research them a bit to see how compatible they are with the truck.

Good to know. I was kinda pissed at first because my dealer told me the truck I agreed to buy had a remote starter on the key. Come to find out last-minute that it didn't. At that point I wanted the truck so bad I went ahead and paid the extra for the non-key one, even though I really didn't like the idea of an extra fob on my key chain. At the time I didn't realize that it extended range and just assumed the extra cost was due to it having to be installed after-the-fact. Well, sometimes you win some and sometimes you lose some. Looks like this time I won because I would not have wanted a starter with a highly limited range. So far the one I do have works very well and I am quite pleased.

My factory install starts quite well. I'm on 24 hour call, so when the phone rings during the middle of the night, I push my button from the bedside, while I'm getting dressed. Always starts. Can't say much about the range, as I've only tried it from at most I'm about 150' away. From inside the house I'm about 80' and through 4 walls.....I'm happy.

Mine works right at about 400' line of sight no problem and I can squeek another 100' feet out of it by holding it up to my jawbone (don't ask how it works...it just does). If anything is between me and the truck, that is a different story. I do wish it was bi-directional though.

Does anyone know if the remote start system is smart enough to let the glow plugs warm up before starting the engine?

I have noticed that the engine starts much faster using remote start than if I were to get in and and wait for the glow plug indicator to turn off before starting the engine....same conditions of course, overnight with same outdoor temperature.

I noticed that as well. My guess is that it is pre-programmed for diesels. However, I am going to ask about that when I go back in to get my second remote programmed.

I can't answer for sure, but my guess is that it will. The glow plug light comes on for a very short period of time on my truck, even at very low temperatures. It typically takes a few seconds before the truck starts with either fob. My thoughts were that it was doing whatever it needed to do to start the rig.

It is also possible that the dash glow plug is purposefully delayed to be somewhat idiot-proof. Electronic starts could be a bit more exact.

These things are so quick I notice I know forget to even look (or wait) for a glow plug light! Never seems to have a probelm starting though.

Ideally I would like Ford to get rid of the key all together or go with the sytem in the vehicles with MyTouch - automatically unlocks when you walk up then a push to start button. Then for the remote start just use the long range FOB. Then you have the long range start without and extra fob/key hanging on your chain.

FWIW, this is not a feature of My Ford Touch. What you're talking about is an RFID system that is available on many of the same vehicles that have My Ford Touch available. For example, my wife's 2011 Explorer has MFT, but no RFID. It would be cool if it did, though
