Overdrive problems

I have a 2004 Expedition Eddie Bauer and recently I pressed the overdrive off button on the end of my shifter but nothing happened. I noticed that when I first turn on the truck the o/d off light does not display most of the time and even if it does the od off doesnt work. I dont actually know if it is stuck with overdrive on or off. I pull a trailer in the summer so I obviously want it off during this time. There is no check engine light on indicating any codes, and I ran a scan and no codes came up. Any ideas?
P.S. around the same time I also noticed that my 4x4 high was not working however the light comes on when I first turn on the truck. When I turn the switch tot 4x4 high I hear the electronic controller immediately click twice but then nothing and no light coming on, when I switch into 4x4 low I again hear the electric controller click once and then it engages the 4x4 low and clicks a second time and the light shows it is engaged.
Are these 2 separate problems? And does anyone have a solution to both / either problem?
Thanks.
Doug

For your first issue, you likely have the very common problem of the wiring harness being damaged where it exits the shift lever. You will have to pull the covers off the steering column to investigate or repair.

The 4x4 issue is separate.

^ What he said. I too couldn't get O/D to turn off. One of the wires up to the button was broken. A quick solder and tape and I was good to go.

Thanks

I pulled off the rubber cover off the shifter at the steering column and found that the wires leading into the shifter were broken. Upon soldering them back together and taping them my overdrive switch is working good. Thanks for all your help.
