I am lost....i broke the slip yoke on the passenger side drive axle, but i am not sure if i can do this easily myself or what exactly it will entail. Can anyone help with a possible step by step procedure?
I am also trying to remove the hub assembly. I managed to get as far as removing the circular dingus with the 4 notches that needs a hub wrench for removal. To my understanding, after this step it should slide off(the rotor assembly). Am i doing something wrong?
I have searched for hours on the net with no laid out procedure for what i am trying to do, without completely dismantling the front end of my bronco.
First off where did the shaft brake on te side still attached to the front differential or on the wheel end? If it is broken on the differential side the u joint must be cut out or the differential must be removed. If not you will have to pull thehub/rotorwith a special dana 44 axle socket after that you must remove the spindle shaft without damaging it then remove the broken axle shaft. If you are good with a wrench it is most definitely possible but it is a decent amount of work if your not to familiar with the ttb
Ok, so this is the way i see it looking at the front of the bronco, going from wheel to front diff......Hub, ujoint right between ball joints, shaft onto the slip yoke, slip yoke ujoint holder is what snapped, the Ujoint is still intact and on the chunk that is attached to the diff. Does this mean i have to pull the diff?
P.S i am still having trouble getting that @#%*ing hub off, i took the special nut off but now i have no avail. should it just slide right off? I cant do anything axle related until that hub is off.
If you have removed BOTH spindle nuts, the hub should come right off. Then you continue as the previous poser said. I must say, I hope the outter axle is broke, because pulling the diff is a pain. I dont think you can saperate the u-joint without pulling it. I didnt understand the bit about cutting out the u-joint though. If you cut it out, how would you install a new one without pulling the diff?
You posted about the same time as I did. In any case, if both spindle nuts are off (there is a lockring between them) you may have to pull hard enough to pop the seal off the hub. This happens ocasionally when the bearing hangs up. It shouldnd be too hard.
If you are crafty you can cut that inner u joint with torches careful not to cut the existing yolk on the diff side the. You can tap the cups out when it is still hot or use a c clamp to press them out (do not beat on yolk or over heat because it will destroy the seal in he differential also a universal u joint press would make this process much easier) it's challenging but the only way to service that u joint without pulling the front differential. As far as getting your hub off some fords have a locking wheel bearing nut and others have two nuts with a tang type lock washer. Look in the hub with a light and make sure all nuts and washers are removed then tap it off with a hammer on the rotor sometimes the wheel seal gets stuck. Be sure to
Take your time with this it's a
Big project that's pretty challenging
Is the second spindle nut taken off with the 4 pronged special socket as well? Ive tried tapping the back of the rotor with a hammer with no avail......
I finally got it, i didnt see the second because of that washer, the hub is off! Now if i want to pull the whole driveshaft assembly out, (ujoints connected and all), will i need to take the balljoint assemly off to allow for clearance of the shafts and joints? the clearance seems close but i am not sure.....i appreciate all of the knowledge and help out there
First put the cross of the u joint into the yolk on the differential side then start both caps into the yolk then press them in slowly with a c clamp or ball joint press then slip the other yolk over the cross and press in the other two cups. Then slip the outer portion of the axle shaft into the slip spline. It's a very hand trick a local shop told me about
After all of the sweat and tears, it finally came together. It seems as though finding slip yoke is easier said than done. The parts stores up here have monkeys behind the counters, turns out a local transmission shop has a TON of Dana and Ford drivetrain parts. I found exactly what i needed. I was skeptical about forums but i have been converted. FTE for the win.
