A Question About Headers

Hi guys, pretty new to the forum, and new to owning an f series. I want to put headers on my 85 F-150 with the 351 H.O. motor and i was wondering what the best options would be. I would like to go with longtubes but have heard they might contact the crossmember. Also what would be a good brand to go with. Im a high school senior working part time right now so id like to find the best bang for the buck quality wise and also somethign that wont break the bank. Any help is appreciated.

I just bought a pair of JBA shorties in stainless steel. I should have them on within a month or so, but they look very nice. I shopped around and was able to find them for $320 delivered I think that was a good deal.

Before you spend money on headers, think about what you intend to do with your truck. Do you want low RPM torque, or high RPM horsepower.

Shorties and a good flowing exhaust system will help in the low end, and you can use off the shelf piping.

Long tubes require a little more thought in both routing and performance.

This is pretty much the opposite of everything else I've read?

You're saying shorties are better for low-end torque?

OUCH!! I had read about the differences between the two last year, and I thought I remembered that the shorties were the choice for torque.

I just did a quick google search, and it seems I got it backwards, kinda. So, let me take back my last statements, and go do my research again.

Sorry.....

my 351w i put the stock mustang shorties on it with the summit racing cat back dual exhaust kit but the cat was removed sounds good & runs strong. i went with what my pocket told me to go with..altoghter i think i spent $500 on my exhaust with the kit $150, new y pipe $200, kit install + cat removal $150. it was done in 2 stages thats where all the cost came from..
