I have a 2000 F350 Super Duty 4wd 7.3. The drive train acts like it is in neutral. My mechanic told me to see if I can manually shift the transfer case. He believes it may have slipped into a neutral position. Can someone step me through this?
Thanks
I take it you have the electronic shift on the fly? If so, there is a motor on the side of the xfer case, 2 wiring harnesses and I beleive 3 10mm bolts, and it pulls off. that exposes a shaft that the motor normally shifts, a 9/16 open end wrench will fit it, and you can shift it manually that way. the bad news, there isn't a neutral position that i am aware of, was just the 3, 2hi, 4hi, 4 low when I did this with mine. Be sure to apply E brake and chock wheels for safety concerns though.
All gears of the trans. act like neutral. There were no symptoms leading up to the issue though. I was pulling away from a gas station and it just went into this neutral like mode. The rear drive shaft does not turn when in gear either. Just want to check as much as I can before I take it in and pay the big$.
Your Transfer case is probably shot, there are guids on the shift fork that will wearout and cause this. Mine did this luckly I was in my driveway when mine went. Hope this helps.
I was not so lucky. Did have road service on my insurance though. 60 mile tow job. Did you replace your transfer case with a rebuild? Roughly what is a cost on that type of repair?
I got one from the junk yard for about 175 with all intentions on re building my old one. That was over a year ago and I'm still running the one from the junk yard.
