Hello all: I have a 2002 F350 Super Duty crew cab (5-spd standard transmission) which I'm getting ready to take into the shop for repair. Thought I'd check in with the group here first to confirm whether my diagnosis is correct or whether there could be more than one thing causing the problem.
First thing in the morning and/or after sitting for much of the day, the engine won't turn over. When I turn the key fully, it clicks once (engages?) but the engine doesn't turn over. All lights on the display turn on. After a few times of trying this it will start. This problem is intermittent - there are times during the day when I'm driving and turning the engine on and off fairly regularly when this problem doesn't occur. Is this my starter going or could it be something else? A couple of times I've noticed that when the engine finally does start it has a bit of a tough time. Lastly, I've confirmed that the problem is not related to failure to depress the clutch pedal fully.
I would remove all cable connections at the batteries and the starter, clean to shiny metal, and then apply some Noalox on the contact surfaces, them reassemble. Bad connections on high current system does not mix!
Here's a nice battery 101 write up! http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/us20310.htm

You've got an electrical connection problem, and it could be, as mentioned above, battery cable connections.
But it can also be the copper contacts inside the engage solenoid. That's a pretty-common problem with starters with a lot of starts on them.
Though that solenoid IS available as a replacement part (though not easily), unless you know what you're doing you would be better to take it to a competent rebuilder to go through.
Yes, I'm advising you have YOURS rebuilt, and not just get one from a parts house.
Listen to Pop's.He has you on the right track. If the starter is weak, you will get a better built starter from a quality rebuilder.Much more,it should fit the same instead of a cheap reman.
Clean all connections as mentioned above and have the batteries load tested.Never replace just one.
