I have 79 F150 351M 600 edelbrock carb 104 jet and 73 x47 rods on primary and 98 jets on secondary. edelbrock performer 400 intake. intial timing set at 10 deg. vac advance hooked to ported vac on carb. on moderate acceleration valve ping at 2000-2500 RPM. On light acceleration there does not seem to be any ping at least none I can hear. stomping it to the floor will result in valve ping at approximatly same Rpm range. have tried several different grades of gas to no avail. tried seting the dizzy to 8 deg and 6 deg also to no avail. after trying the stuff I could think of I am now turning to the experts at FTE.
There's a sensitivity screw in the diaphram of the distributor. Take the hose off and with a small allen wrench turn the screw ccw. Keep track of how far and where it was in case you want to go back. This will make the advance less. If it works, then try and set your base timing back up a little to the point where its about 2 degrees less than where it will ping. If that doesn't work, put the adjustment screw on the diaphram back where it was and look elsewhere for the problem.

Those are good things to try. The pinging comes from removing the EGR function. The stock distributor is set up for timing the spark to an EGR equiped engine. The EGR gas mix takes a little longer to build pressure than a strictly air-fuel mix so the engine will ping if the spark comes "early" for the air-fuel mix you have now.
