2nd attempt...first one was deleted by me bumping the recalls/tsb tab accidently when going for my photobucket tab (I hate when the back button doesnt work on websites)....ARGH!
Decided to install a backup cam to help with hooking up my trailer. I'm a cheap ******* so i went to Amazon to find something. Settled on this since it had ok reviews. Under 50 bucks. Wont replace the mirrors but does exactly what I need.
I didnt want to install it on the dash so I noticed the little stand would rotate upside down. Turns out its perfect
Took out the upper console so I could remove the trip computer for repair. Decided to find power and ground up there Green w/ yellow stripe for postive and black w/ blue stripe for ground.
Temporarily hooked up the cam to see what she looked like.
People complained the wire was too short in the amazon reviews so i went the shortest route...through the roof.
Popped out the back and then the bottom. It left me 6 inches extra. I swear this kit was made for this thing..lol
In case you ever wondered where the backup beeping comes from...look at the middle pic
Now I turned my attention to the camera power. Used the backup lights to provide the 12v. Nice thing is the monitor auto comes on and shuts off with the camera signal. This way the whole thing works automatically when I move the gear selector.
Busted out the largest diameter shrink tube from my radioshack sampler pack. I never thought I use it..lol
Finished...The wire isnt as noticeable when there isnt a camera flash..same with the rust underneither..lol I'm not drilling my bumper for this however so...oh well.
Very nice install. I use the same camera hooked up to my Pioneer HU. There are also a couple of reverse light wires and grounds behind the license plate in the wire bundles. The ground is black and the reverse is black with a pink tracer.
Can u post a link to amazon where to find it? For that price, might be my next mod!!!
I wasnt sure if this forum was against links so I errored on the side of caution. Looks like someone else did it tho.
I paid 39 with free shipping iirc...the price fluxes alot.
Thanks for the kind words guys.
More more thing i forgot to mention.
Some complained that these things picked up moisture in the lense...So i'm gonna take the cam off and seal all the seams with some silicone. Of course you get what you pay for so I'm not opposed to having to mod some stuff to make it work well.
Since the screen has a 2nd input, I'm going to mount that in the grill aimed down so when i hook up the plow, I can pull right up with the correct alignment. Not sure how it turns on the screen however so that will require some testing and maybe a button. (there is an input selector switch on the side of the screen so that will be tested first)
Very nice install. I have the same camera and did a similar install although I did not run it via the roof. I had plenty of cable so used the door plate route. It works well with my Chinese HU. Since my HU has the "sense" for reverse, I installed a small 12V micro relay and used it to "switch" the sense to the HU. The relay is hooked up to the +12v side of the Parkaing Assist switch (LED) on the dash. That way when I turn the the Parkihg Assist off , it also turns off the Back-up Camera automatic swithcing of the HU.
Now w/o the HU switching automatically when I go in reverse (as I felt looking that the front of my TT when I'm backing up is a bit useless and the constant beeping is annoying), I have a wireless Back-up camera that I hooked up to the HU AUX input. I can place it in the spot I am backing into and then switch the HU to AUX and see the rig from an "external" point of view when backing up

Reading your write-up inspired me to finally order "XO Vision HTC35 Universal Weatherproof Vehicle Backup Camera with Easy Installation and NightVision" from amazon.com! I just need a camera as my kenwood head unit has an auto-switching reverse cam input. I saw someone in new jersey install a camera similar to this one by drilling a small hole in the center of their license plate. I am thinking about possibly trying that, but I don't want to get hassled for "tampering" with my plate.
