My local mechanic's been warning me about the ball joints and tie rods since I've owned this truck. Now that I'm planning to take it on a bunch of ATV excursions this summer I decided I can't ignore it anymore. The cost of a professional job is ridiculous so naturally I'll do it myself but there's no mention of the ball joints in my Haynes manual (thanks Haynes).
Can anyone give me an outline for this and include the proper torque specs, etc? I'd appreciate it.
That would explain why they only show up as 4WD on Rock Auto, I was wondering about that.....if I can't find king pins in the Haynes manual later then I may take a picture and post it to try and figure out what's what :P
The king pins can wear out but if they have had regular servicing with grease, they usually outlast the rest of the truck. I would find another mechanic to take a look.
Well that's handy, my truck does have those. Not sure if they actually need replacement. The other thing my "mechanic" said needed replacing was the tie rods and on my truck there seem to be 4 of them. The bushings are cracked and disintegrating so I'll definately do those but ofcourse there's not much about that in the Haynes manual either, just a paragraph about how there are many different configurations :P Gotta love them.
