Actually this is an RV on a ford chassis.
2006 16000 miles
driving along and the whole dials unit keeps dropping to zero, even the trip computer goes to zero.
the speedo goes below zero!
later when the engine has been off for days off we hear a clicking from the speedo and the needle is vibrating below zero again.
any ideas anyone?
thanks all
The first thing to come to mind is there is obviously an electrical problem. I would look for the fuse distribution box, pull it away from where ever it's mounted and check behind it for corrosion.
The speedometer should have a peg to rest on at zero so it should not be possible to read below zero. The only time I have seen one below zero is when it has spun completely around and past the maximum and is stuck 360 degrees out. This usually only happens if the cluster has been out and work done and then reinstalled and the needle was allowed to spin all the way around. I have seen a few come in that way with no explanation and I was able to use the computer hooked up to it and do a self test forcing the guage to sweep back to its normal position.
All this however doesnt explain the trip computer faults, so you may simply have a defective cluster.

yes it bangs against the stop. EVEN with the power off!
thanks
now if somebody knows how to get the binnacle out... that would be great!
2006 itasca RV - yes i asked the manufacturer.
aaah yeah thanks
sadly i need the instructions to tell the dealer. only dealers can change these cos of the mileage odometer rules.
F**k a bunch of rules! Take it apart and find the problem. You aren't trying to cheat the mileage, you are trying to fix your instrument panel. I still say it's an electrical issue.
