I am in the process of installing a 6" pro comp lift on my 04 supercrew 4x4. Things were going good until I got to the upper strut bolts. Trying to remove the 3 nuts, one came off on the passenger side. The other 2 just spin, the bolt and nut. Havent tried the drivers side yet. The only idea I had was making a notch in the top with a dremel tool and small cutting wheel for a screwdriver but my dremel tool smoked. Anybody ran into this before?
I think your idea of cutting a notch in the top is a good idea. There is really no room underneath the bolt to apply any pressure on the nut because of the coil and the spring shield. If you hit it with enough torque before it can spin it should come off aka impact wrench. They might be able to loosen them for free at a local shop or you could rent one from advance auto, autozone, some place like that. Soak them in PB Blaster too overnight.
I'm not familiar with the pro comp lift kit but does it completely replace your shock/coil over assembly? If so and you won't need the stock coil over or bolts, try using some pliers or more specifically Craftsman Robogrips and grap the threads on top while turning the nut with your end wrench. The threads will be bent to hell but you may be able to get the nut loose enough to cut the bolt off below the nut with a hacksaw blade.
The pro comp lift comes with strut spacers, so you do re-use them. I ended up trying to cut a notch in the bolt but that didnt work. The drivers side ended up being the same way, plus one of the 3 studs was broken or cut off. I decided to grab the sawzall with a metal blade and cut the bolts. I will have to rent a pair of spring compressors or take it somewhere to remove the spring but then Ill just replace all the bolts and weld them in the bottom so I can tighten them again. Not the way I wanted to do it but oh well, what fun would it be if everything was easy.
Yeah I forget about man's second best friend the sawzall. The last thing I used mine for was to cut a couch in half to get it into an upstairs apartment haha. Glad to hear you got them off.
