Welcome to FTE
DuraSpark Electronic Ignition introduced in 1974, but not all F100/350's came with it until 1976, as it depended on specific applications, emissions requirements.
1974/79 F100/350: The ignition module mounts to the left fender inner apron, just in front of the firewall.
First of all, what type of motor is it? Ford obviously or you wouldnt be asking here, heh.
The Duraspark is a good unit, and has been proven to be more than enough for engines up around 400+ hp. I prefer a drop in system like an MSD Ready to Run because it doesnt require an ignition box/controller. I prefer a clean installation over all.
That being said, you said you want a points type system? Go search on Summit, Jegs, etc for ideas. Points arent bad, but there is more maintenance involved. I ran a dual point Accell on my 302 for a few years, just a touch trickier to setup, but it worked fine.
If it comes with electronic, I'd leave it alone if it's a Duraspark, Crane or Pertronix. If it has points, nothing really wrong with them but I still prefer electronic. Easier starts, no maintenance and hotter spark. My truck was changed to Pertronix before I got it and it's performed flawlessly.
I think I want a points system. Does that sound about right? I am not real familiar with the ignition systems in cars and trucks.
If that is correct does the pre 1974 trucks have points systems?
1957/73 V8 trucks use the same points/condenser/rotor/dizzy cap as 1957/73 V8 Passenger Cars (except hipos w/dual point dizzies), and...
If the 1974/75 does not have DuraSpark, the parts are the same 1957/75.
Since 1974 was the first year DuraSpark electronic ignition was available in Passenger Cars, Trucks, Bronco's & Econolines, nothing prior to 1974 will have it "as original."
Petronix drop in. New points distributor from Advance auto 40 bucks.. petronix ignitor kit 70 bucks.. if you already have a decent points distributor with a solid shaft on it, it takes about 15 minutes to convert it in the parking lot. 110 bucks for a quality distributor is much cheaper than most alternatives ive seen ranging from 200 - 450 bucks
Hello all, new here! I just bought a 1985 Ford F-150 4wd with 4.9L 300 Inline, 4spd Manual; upon further inspection I have noticed tons of the emissions equipment are missing, blocked off, or hacked. The Carter YFA Carb is running super rich, wired up the throttle to keep her running most the time.
I really do not feel like rebuilding the stock air cleaner assembly, replacing missing pieces of emissions. So I am looking into running a Offy dual-port man, Holley 390cfm
4bbl, EFI dual exhaust mani's with 2 1/4" single pipe, and a D.U.I. Dizzy.
Unfortunately funds are tight, so it could take 4 to 5 months; can I throw an old emissions free carb on her to get me by? Any suggestions on this rattle trap. Once I am able I'll post pics.
Truck is an explorer package, so I am wondering if there was originally a 302 or 351 in there, shes not much to look at bodywise, but 4wd works good and she sits nice for having worn shock absorbers, and apparently been beat. I paid $900 for this gal, so I have no choice to keep it, looked into Duraspark 2, but cost would be about the same as DUI and more wires I believe, I could get a duraspark dizzy and control from an 84 302-V8 Mustang for $50 though, would this work?
Ive previously owned a 67 Ford F-100 w/300, 3spd column and 76 F-100 w/360,Auto and 73 Chevy C10 w/250 inline, 4spd. So needless to say I am pissed about this emissions crap, PLEASE help!
You might want to post this in the forum that deals with that year truck. The dinosaurs we are dealing with here are from 1961-1966 and their wranglers are even older making them far more temperamental about stuff...
