I sold a motorcycle on ebay, The buyer says he's a new rider and wants me to drop it at it parents, in the next town over. No problem....
Wins bike on Sat, Then emails me on sat, says he's at his parents and to bring bike, Or he'll leave the cash and I can bring it sunday....
We exchange emails 4-5 times during which I keep asking for his parents address and his phone number, The responses I get make me think this kid's not all there..... like "call me when you're on the way" but he didn't leave a phone number.
I tell him I can come Sunday between 3-4, but need to get a trailer and a buddy to help. AT 3 PM the kid emails me the address. I email him telling him it'll have to be another day sine I didn't get my trailer, or a buddy since the kid never got back to me....
today I get

To your credit you hope I understand??? I'm not sure if this is your 1st transaction on here or what, but after I agreed to drop the bike off, (where as most people would THEN give me an address, I had to ask for it 3 times. (7:10 am, 8.51 am 10:38 am) I thought it was strange that you never did answer my questions. I told you I could be there between 3 and 4 pm. At this point, I hadn't got my trailer and the help I had lined up. You didn't email me the address until 3, AFTER I had been waiting around all day. At this point, This shouldn't have even been an issue as you said you'd leave the money with your parents.
I get that you don't want the bike, or can't afford it, or whatever, But Ebay charged me 60 bucks as a final value fee. Which I'm not about to pay for someone punking out on a legally binding transaction. I'll be filing a non paying bidder with ebay
What a rat. Seems there are more of them on fleabay every day.
One thing I learned about allowing pickup or delivery sales on eBay is to require the payment by normal methods before delivery. That prevents a buyer from getting a case of buyers remorse when you finally meet. A legit buyer should be fine with that. Paypal protects him as much as you, and he avoids traveling to a strange place with a pocket full of cash. Not that Paypal is any great protection, but it is safer than a cash deal IMO.
I agree Get the money first then talk about delivery..
Although ebay requires a return policy..
They are more for the buyer than the seller..
You can't even leave negative feedback for the jerk..
I sold a few things and they didn't pay.. YOu file a claim with ebay and all they do is wait for the buyer to respond.. If they don't ebay does nothing to them..
Hello Jake, I buy a lot of stuff off of EBay, I know there are sellers who cancel bids from folks with less 5 or no feedback. I hope you did that as well.
eBay is a a love hate thing for me. I like being able to sell my used gadgets on it but I have had so many people flake out and not pay for items it's ridiculous.
Plus the fees just seemed to keep going up. What makes me mad though is eBay makes me pay for the listing and any little thing (bold, subtitles, extra pictures...etc) added to it which ok that's fine but then they charge me a final value fee which I understand they have to make their money but then I get money through PayPal which eBay owns and they charge me a fee in PayPal too. So once it's all said and done I end up paying like $75-80 in fees on a laptop or phone that I sell.
Jake, I had that happen on a truck I sold on Ebay. The high bidder kept giving me the run around Finally I took it to Ebay & I believe they dropped the charges & I blocked that buyer from ever being able to bid on my stuff. It was a hassle & **** off, but Ebay was fair after all it isn't their fault that A$$es use their site to pull this crap.
The best advice I ever got regarding E-bay is don't sell anything on E-bay that you can't afford to give away. That being said it is a great market for unusual/obsolete items, especially when you live in low population areas.
Craigslist is really nothing but an electronic version of the classified ads that used to be in the back of the newspaper. No one expected the newspaper to make them whole if they got ripped off after answering a personal advert. But somehow people think Craiglist should be responsible for evil doers who use the list.
eBay used to be what Craiglist is now. A place for a willing buyer to find a willing seller, and the two of them work out a deal. Feedback was provided so that each party could gain some sense of confidence, but otherwise you were on your own. But somehow people felt that eBay should be responsible for any bad deals. When eBay began to bend to these consumer demands it ruined the site. It has now become a big commercial sellers swap meet, with very few individuals selling stuff from their garage, and I find that mostly useless.
As a seller on eBay or Craiglist, you only get ripped off if you allow it to happen. Use a little common sense and you will have your money before risking your property. Your only risk is the eBay fees, and usually you can get those refunded if a deal fails.
