Have 88 BroncoII w/ 2.9ltr. Quit on me yesterday like it ran outta gas...had plenty. Pulled it home and pulled the codes on it awhile ago and got a 96. Says "Fuel Pump Circuit Open"-Battery to ECA (1988 On). What is an ECA? Pump Relay maybe? And does anybody know if this things gotta fuse for the fuel pump in the fuse panel and if so which one? I'm stumped. Any help would really be appreciated.
Look down the left side of the diagram and you will see the fuel pump relay. The long rectangle in the middle of the diagram is the ECA or engine computer. It monitors the fuel pump voltage on terminal #94. It's not getting voltage. The voltage comes from the fuel pump relay. Make sure you have power on the yellow wire going to the relay. Make sure the relay clicks when you try to start the engine.
Have 3 relays near the fender well, one is fuel, one is eec, and the other is ac. Pulled them all outta their sockets and checked for voltage....had 12v. Then pulled the covers off of em' and had my daughter turned the key on. They ALL closed and completed the circuits. Fuel pump ran for 2-3 seconds then the eec relay opened and stopped it from running. Think this is normal till the eec signals there's rpm's to the eca. Think maybe a bad fuel pump socket or a short somewhere in that orange/lt. blue wire going to the eca? What bout the blk/lt green wire from the eec relay to tha eca? Could it maybe not be signaling the eca that theres rpms so the fuel pump could come back on?
Check your codes again. Like you said, if the ECA doesn't see signals from the dist module, it thinks the engine is not running and turns off the fuel pump relay.
But I can't think of a scenario where the EEC relay would open except a bad ignition switch. You might try wiggling the key and see if it will start. I just had to replace the ignition switch on a 86 fuel injected ranger for the same reason. It would start then die, start then die. I had to start it, and then keep slight pressure on the keyswitch, and it would keep running.
Turned the key on awhile ago and pushed in on the schrader valve and gas spewed out of it bout 3 inches. Wasn't doing that before. Replaced the ignitiion switch and the key and tumbler last summer. Think i gotta really bad connection at the relay plugins or the wires going into em. Batterys dead. Left the key on the other day when the guy pulled me to the house. Loaned my charger out to a friend and it somehow got "stolen". Gonna get my daughter ta jump me off tomorrow. Got a feeling it'll crank. Will keep ya posted and really appreciate ur help Franklin 2!!!
