Can you see any voltage patterns on the coil primary?

The ignition module is triggered by the EEC, which picks up signals from the crank position sensor. Make sure the sensor is connected, and working. You can pull it off and measure its coil resistance, and put a voltmeter across it and swing some steel past it to see if it generates a voltage pulse. If so, check its wires going back to the EEC. I don't have a diagram in front of me now, but the EEC diagram can be found from many sources. I've heard of some people damaging the wires, as they run past the water pump up to the harness on the lower manifold.

Possibly the PIP sensor inside the distributor is fried. You can have it tested,$20 for a replacement. You`ll have to press off the gear to swap it out.
