I'm wanting a '00 or '01 Explorer 4 dr. with 3rd row seating. Is the six cylinder engine gonna perform ok with a full load? Any problems I shoud look out for, engine or otherwise?

Ok here's the deal. You want to get a 2002+ Explorer if you want third row seating because then you will have room for 3 people back there because of the port-hole in frame design the 2k2 Explorer uses instead of the traditional leaf spring setup. The tires do not protrude into the body so you have more room in the back for another bench seat.
If you want to stick with a 2nd Gen Explorer, that's cool, but I suggest a newer one for people capacity. As for the V-6, get the SOHC V-6, and you will be just fine 210 Horsepoewr @ 5,100 RPMs and 250 torque @ 3,400 RPMs is very strong. My truck pulls a 8.0 0-60 time completely stock.
The only reason I say go V-8 is because the V-8 gets the more reliable 4R70W tranny instead of the 5R55E automatic based off the A4LD which is not the most durable tranny. The V-8 also gets about as good mileage as the V-6 with a good amount more torque, although its horsepower is actually 5 lower Even so, you'll be happy with either SOHC or V-8, but do NOT get the OHV V-6.
