Starter Removal

How do I remove the starter from a 53 F100 215 Auto? It has one bolt that's easy to see, but I can't see where the other is. Anyone have experience or a shop manual expertise to share? The transmission is filthy, but I still couldn't see where the bolt goes. Anyone know?

If it's the typical early Ford starter, the two thru-bolts you'll see on the end of the starter towards the front end are what holds it in. Be careful taking it out, the starter can come apart if you just pull on the front end.

Edit: maybe not -- should have looked at the Parts CD first. I would guess there are actually 3 bolts, based on location of the 2 you can see

My 215 w/ manual had one bolt (5/16 arrow to left) but you also had to remove (well loosen, don't take them all the way out) the two long skinny bolts that go thru the case (visible in above picture on end of case). Hope this helps.

^^^ sounds more like it than the pic with 3 visible bolts. Mine had one bolt coming through the transmission side and that's all I can see. I'll loosen up those bolts you talked about and see if the thing will come out.
