Do you hear the fuel pump run? If not, it's possible the fuel pump cutoff switch is bad. Try resetting it and/or giving it a whack. There are other things in the fuel pump circuit that could be at fault, but start with the switch.
There is also a fuel pump relay in the power distribution box under the hood. I'd start with that. It's cheap and easy to replace. If you think it's fuel related, try squirting some ether into the intake and starting it. If it starts it's probably fuel related. By the way, there is an Explorer forum here.
Where would I look for the switch?I found a switch under the carpet on the passenger side and I tried to reset it but it didn't work and when I try to start the truck there is no sound coming from the pump.It use to whirrrr when I turned the key on to start. Thanks so much for the info
Look in the owner's manual for the location of the inertia switch (or "fuel pump cutoff") and for the layout of the fuse block for the fuel pump relay. You can swap in a relay from a less-important location to drive hoem because they're all the same.
i found that switcht, but how do I know if it works.I have never worked on a truck and am trying my best to fix this problem w/out being ripped off my garages cause they may think I'm unaware of the things u know
Rap it sharply with the plastic handle of a screwdriver and the red button should pop up into the window on the side of the button shroud. The manual should also tell you that you can pry the button up thru the window with a fine flathead screwdriver to kill the pump. Just push it back down to reset the inertia switch.
That just shows that it wasn't the inertia switch. If you can connect a jumper wire from the cigar lighter power wire (LightBlue/White) to the Pink/Black wire of the inertia switch connector, that will power up the pump and tell you if the pump works or is totally dead. (Some vehicles have to have the key on for the cigar lighter to have power.)
Have you swapped out the horn relay into the fuel pump relay socket?
Look on top of the engine for a chrome tube that runs front-to-back along the plenum; that's the fuel rail, and there's a schrader valve (like on a tire) that is used to test fuel pressure. Unscrew the cap & use a BP pen to press the valve open - a little fuel should squirt out if the pump has run recently. If it doesn't, then there's definitely something wrong with the fuel pump or its power circuit.
