My '81 needs a new set of shocks, front and rear. Can someone suggest some good shocks for me to buy? I want it to have a little better handling than it has now, so would quad shocks be a good thing to put on? or are those too hard to put on for a 15 year old. do front and/or rear sway bars bolt on or do they require talent and skill to put on? the shock mounts look kinda bad, don't know if they're OK, but where can I buy new ones?? Sorry about all the questions, but it's kinda warm outside and I gotta have something to work on when I get sick of working on my car........Thanks in advance.
I've found the CarQuest Bruiser Gas VST shocks to be GREAT, and cheap @ $20ea with LLT warranty. I've put them on my truck, my brother-in-law's '93 Bronco, and a few other people's trucks and we're all happy with them.
Quad front shocks are MUCH more difficult than sway bars, so do those first. Quads require you to grind/cut/chisel/torch 12 rivets off your frame without damaging it, 12 more off a junk frame, and then bolt on the quad shock towers. Then you have to pull the radius arms off the axles to get the lower mounts swapped. I've done it (check my signature link) and I wouldn't recommend it for someone just learning.
Rear sway bars are bolt-ons, but the front's end-link brackets go under the coil perches (like the quad brackets), so that's a little more effort.
