Dana 80 pinion bearing
Finally got the plow off my 2006 F-350 dually 4x4. Hasn't been over 50mph since Nov. I took the truck out on the interstate and noticed a slight growl noise when I let off the fuel between 50mph and 60mph, no noise the rest of the time. . Thought it might be a u-joint but oil is leaking out the front of the rear differential. Is also a little free play at the yoke.
I'm assuming that the pinion bearing is shot. Could someone point me in the right direction to get this replaced? Maybe a "TRUSTED" mechanic near Eau Claire WI?? I usually repair ALL my equipment myself. I've just never repaired a rear dif before. Gotten a couple guestimates ranging from $1000-$2000. Seems a LITTLE high just to replace a bearing.
Thanks Chip

If the pinion bearing is loose, the bearing and race need to be replaced. This involves removing the carrier, driving out the race, verifying pinion depth and gear mesh patterns with the new bearing and shimming if necessary, and reassembling to the correct bearing preload. $1k-2k is steep, but I think $500-600 would be reasonable. Make sure whoever does it has experience with larger differentials and warranties their work.
