Truck Just Flatlined

I have an 87' F150 w\ 300ci 6 cylinder that I'm trying to nurse back to life. When I got it the fuel selector value and the high pressure fuel pump was bad. I bypassed the fsv and replaced the fuel pump and she ran fine for a while. However, after changing the value cover gasket about a week ago it started spitting and sputtering like it was starving for fuel and finally quit running altogether. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
Yesterday I tried to start it and it fired right up, ran for a few seconds and died. I placed the key in the off position and returned it to the on position to see if the fuel pump would prime. It did, but there was a sizzling sound coming from the relays. I am absolutely lost! <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" oreferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><vath o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></vath><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><v:shape style="WIDTH: 11.25pt; HEIGHT: 16.5pt" id=_x0000_i1025 alt="0" type="#_x0000_t75"><v:imagedata src="file:///C:\DOCUME~1\RECEIV~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\msohtml1\01\cli p_image001.gif" o:href="http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums/images/smilies2/confused.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape> Can any please help me?<o></o>

By bypassing the fuel selector valve you have probably toasted the relay for it....That is what makes the pump prime its' self...When you bypassed it, the relay wasn't there to shut off the "Priming" mode.....Just a thought...

x2: Probably a good call on the FSV. I would replace the relay and FSV and see what happens. You can also check for stored codes. There is a way to do it for free but couldn't find the link... i'm sure someone else will chime in

I'm almost sure that the fuel selector valve in 1987 was completely mechanical and not connected to any electrical systems at all. It wasn't until the 90's that they were electrical.

Also, I've never heard of a fuel selector valve relay or "priming mode". Maybe you should check your blinker fluid level and muffler bearings while you're at it.

I would guess that, since you have to take off quite a bit of stuff to get to the valve cover gasket on a 300, that you didn't put something back together right. Did you take pictures or label all the connectors? I would check all the vacuum lines and make sure everything is routed correctly and that you don't have a leak. There should be a vacuum sticker on the underside of the hood.

Way to go andy....Way to go....

I simply was meaning the 3 or so second priming the fuel pump does, prior to starting...

Ok I'll give andym props for chatching the 87 truck year (tried to give you a rep andy but the system told me no ). I wouldn't have thought about the FSV being mechanicle since this thread has mostly 90's and newer trucks.

Also I know what Wes meant about the "priming" mode being the 2-3 sec the fuel pump runs in the ACC key mode before you start the truck.

As for 87 Ford Driver: Yes you might have a vacuum leak in there somewhere or misconnected a hose. I would double check your vacuum and then check for codes. If you don't pull any I always go back to basics... Check for fuel pressure at the rail, compression, and spark.
