Do the codes have to match perfectly or could we get away with any of the 3.55 gear codes?
Yeah U can providing you change both axles front and rear need to match if they dont it will "hop" down the road in 4x4 just like if u run 2 different rim sizes u cant even get away with 16" and 16.5" everything needs to match perfectly from front axle to rear axle.

Okay, thank you. I think my dad found a better condition axle in a j/y for $350, wants to do that instead of the whole truck. Guess the truck will still be there if he wants to try to upgrade to a 5spd at some point
