synthetic or no?

2005 6.0L FX4, 150,000 miles. Should I go synthetic or leave it dino? Gets cold here in winter, sometimes 5-15 below but going into summer when it gets real hot here. Is pretty normal to be 100 pplus during the day then 40 or so at night.

Sorry I should add the reason I asked to start with. Im a bit worried about the cold winters. Will my truck start when its -10 and snow over the whole truck? My kids have always been able to say dads truck will make it.

Most of us have switched to synthetic for the cold winters.

Check out the search feature there are already tons of threads which discuss the virtues of synthetic vs dino oil.

Personally, I run Syn but the differences are pretty negligible.

That would depend on the individual circumstances. Some have even claimed that their truck "felt" a little worse when using Syn versus dino. Don't know if that's true or not, but that's all I have to go by.

I know the differences have been better for me. Much better cold starts and I'm able to go further between changes. Not everyone can, it just depends on how heavy the truck is worked.

2 things that worry me bout switching is 1...I've always been told when you switch to synthetic you can't go back to conventional. And 2nd my truck (bought used) has high miles and hate to ruin truck by switching to synthetic. But I've read numerous threads on switching doesn't hurt and helps with winter start ups.

No problem, the dealer here up north swicth from 15w40 reg. oil to 0w30 synth. in winter. It does make a big difference at minus 20.

I run synthetic year round. Usually try to get Rotella T6, but I have Mobil 1 in there now.

I switched to synthetic a little over a year ago and would never go back. Truck runs much better cold and fires up better.

Syn. will work better in the cold and won't "cook" in the heat. I had a similar situation and switched to syn. with no problems.

2. Come visit me in January and I will help you redefine "cold winter"

Please, please, please run conventional 15w-40 in your truck all year. Then, I'll be able to read you "Effin Ford! My 6.0 doesn't start, then bucks and spews smoke for ten minutes when I start it at -15F." thread next winter.\

I can always use a laugh.
