Hey everyone, I've been reading and learning on this site for over a year and finally decided to make an account. I'm still driving a chevy as of now but now have the chance to get into a Ford finally . I found a 2001 F350 supercab shortbox truck for sale and has 80,000 miles on her. Its been owned by an older couple its whole life and they want 17k for it. What do you guys think for this price? I want a diesel and the 7.3 sound like the real deal. I'm in a 5.3 gasser right now and making a wapping 14mpg, hopefully the 7.3 would do a little better lol. Thanks everyone!
First off Welcome to FTE, There is a immense amount of knowledge here. Now to the truck at 80,000 mi she is still a baby, the price is about right, there is a thread here that tells what to look for but right now I can't find it.
Welcome to FTE....Sounds like a nice truck.A few years ago that price might have been high, but since the problems with the 6.0 and 6.4 are eating folks up these trucks are in high demand. They are hard to come by here because folks are holding onto them.Good luck.
Thanks for all the replies! I'll try to get pictures of it up as soon as I can. I also found a 2004 f250 6.0 powerstroke with 75000 miles for about a thousand more, what do you guys think about the 6.0? I know it has its problems but is it a good upgrade from the 7.3? Like fuel mileage whise and starting in the winter? I live in ND so winter starting is very important. Thanks!
Welcome friend. If at all possible please try the 7.3 first. The only experience I have with the 6.0 was my company truck. It was an 03 F-350. It did have a few issues, but the company sent it in for repair. As far as cruising, the 6.0 was more to my liking. But, if you read about them you will discover a love/hate relationship from most owners. The 7.3 does not feel as quick in the stock form, but with a few modifications, (PMS known as powerstroke modification syndrome), you will find that they are very relaible and peppy. I hope I never have to give mine up and with only 147,00 +/- miles, I plan on it lasting a long time.

Personally I would stay away from the 6.0's especially the early ones. If you really want a 6.0 look at a 06 or 07. Go to the 6.0 section and do some homework.
The 7.3 has its fair share of problems most can be addressed by prevenative maintnance, and know how from the guys here, there all a skilled smart and friendly bunch of guys who will go out of there way to help another brother out. Looking at a 6.0 is understandable because its a newer truck and has had less time on it, unless you know its flaws. Your looking in the ball park of about $3500. to address the problem spots. With a 6.0 its not a question of if its gonna leave you stranded and cost a lot of money to fix, its when? From what I have gathered the 6.0 is a good truck after the problems have been worked out. You might also get 1-2 mpg better with the 6.0 depending on who you talk to about it. My shop truck gets 15 on a good day with 3:73 gears. Ive talked to a few guys with the 6.0 and some say 15mpg at best and others say they get 18 at best. If you want to weigh the odds I can give you a run down on what need to be fixed or changed on the 6L, and we can compare that to what you might run into with the 7.3.
Thanks everyone for all the replies back! Yeah this is a hard choice lol. I want the 7.3 but the low mile 6.0's keep looking good to. I hear the 6.0's start better in the cold? Its really going to blow if i go to work and after it wont start... This winter it seemed to always be below zero. I know the diesels are a way bigger pain in the winter then a gas truck but for some reason i really want a diesel, and a ford .
JMHO but if the glow plug system is kept up to snuff I would not worry about the cold starts with a 7.3, I have 190k on mine & it's been plugged in to the block heater 1 time just to see if it worked. The cord is still cable tied behind the bumper from the factory. That said but I'd have a hard time tradeing mine for a brand new 6.0 or 6.4 for that matter, just my thoughts so good luck with your search & welcome.
Not to be a jerk but you wouldnt be the smartest person to choose a 6L over a 7.3 just for that reason, Like cj45lc said as long as the glow plug is up to pair and batteries are good your golden, if you have the option to plug it in at work do it, if not it will still start as long as theses two things are in good working order and to help out an additive is always a smart thing too. You can have the same problems with a 6L too if any of theses things go out. MHO amd I told it like it is
No tranny problems from what the guy told me. He said all he's done to it basically is change the oil. He said its been a great truck. Its been an ND truck its whole life so I'm pretty sure the underbody doesn't look like a MN truck. The 2004 that caught my eye lately is a supercab shortbox with 72k on the clock, its a 1 owner truck lariet and wow it looks nice! Ugh why does the 6.0 have to have problems lol. Its so much easier to just trade vehicles into a dealer and the only 7.3's that show up on a dealers lot around here already have 200k+ on them
