Question buckin' truck...

I have a 91 F150 302 a/t. Recently it has started "bucking" when accelerating, but only in a low rpm range, mainly in 2nd and 3rd gear. If I accelerate enough for it to downshift into a lower gear it stops. When I say bucking I mean it seems like it is either missing REAL bad or like it's something with the tranny. Any ideas what the problem may be or where I should start looking? Also, it seems to be getting worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

There are a number of things that could be responsible for your problem. The least expensive is of course a tune up. Cap, Rotor, Plugs (good ones), Wires, etc. Follow up with your filters especially the fuel filter and try running a fuel injector cleaner through the car. If these components are relatively new, however, they might not need to be replaced, so use your judgement. You might consider checking fuel pressure when this problem occurs to try to weed out a weak fuel pump. Then, you are ready to start playing with sensors. Especially the map sensor. The only other thing I can think of is the transmission slipping a little to make the thing chug. My advice is not to replace all of these things hoping to fix it--unless you are made of money-- but rather check the easy stuff yourself and then maybe have an experienced mechanic take a look at the truck.
Best of luck!

I have the same problem on my truck. It would "buck" in the low rpm's until it got into the power band then it would go away. Had in the shop and they said its the egr valve. Doesn't surprise me after 150,000 miles. Take your's off and see if it is working properly.

what tranny is it? If it's a c6 there is a vacuum actuator on the back of the tranny that could be bad.

Wink buckin' truck...

I had a similar problem not too long ago. The only thing I had to do was change the spark plugs and wires. As it turns out, I had a plug wire that had a boot that had fried at the plug end. I believe that the boot had been resting on the exhaust manifold, so make sure not to let your plug wire boots rest on the exhaust manifold. I couldn't believe that this was the only problem, because it only happened at lower RPM ranges, I thought that I had a fuel injector problem. I would try this first, though, its cheap and easy.
