Hmmmm

I did mine over the weekend and ran into a similar situation. I guess I didn't pay close attention to the direction of the parking brake hinged actuator(lever thingy) when removing it. After an hour or so of mother *****in it, the lever was removed and reversed 180 degrees and the shoes fit perfectly and the drum slid right on. Hope this helps. This job takes a lot of patience, so be prepared.

Which direction does the long end of the fat spring go? It's the only thing that is not symmetrical.

Ya I cannot answer that question? hmmm You would think, because they are asymmetrical it should matter in which direction the long end is placed. Maybe someone here will post a pic of the exact spring placement/orientation?

Figured it out

So I had a second look at everything and it seems I did have the lever backwards. I followed everyone's pictures with the long channel end of the lever towards the caliper opening but mine must be opposite because I have the forward-of-axle caliper.

None of the pictures anyone has up allowed you to determine which diection the fat spring went so I ended up just putting it in so that the long part was on the side that seemed to need more room.

Normally this would have been much easier because you would take the stuff off and put it right back together but since I am rebuilding the axle I had it apart for a few weeks and all the info I could find basically just says put it back the way you found it!

Yup and looking closer at yours the deep fingers of the lever are facing opposite the caliper, which is opposite what the OP shows.

Might be something worth updating in the write up that forward facing caliper axles the lever is opposite too.
