Ok so I have a 96 F-150 inline six five speed, Something is draining my battery I have tried EVERYTHING, popping fuses, disconnected the stereo system, replaced the starter syl. checked all ground cables. I have resorted to charging the battery about every three days. any help or idea's would be greatly appreciated.
i would check your alternator it could be going out and not giving you a good charge.. you can take it out and have autozone or other parts stores check it for you
Not only could a bad alternator not give you a good charge, it could be your drain too. If it has a shorted diode, it will drain your battery in a few hours.
I have replaced the alternator, starter, starter syliode, and it has a draw to the neg. side when it is shut off. it usualy takes about four to six days to drain. battery tested fine. and i even had the started tested just to be sure... and when it is running the battery is charging higher than normal.
Get yourself a test light and hook it up inline to the negative battery cable like so (from
Franklin2's diagrams):
The light will be lit if current is being drawn through the electrical system.
You then need to find the source of the drain...
One place to start is by pulling fuses one at a time until the light goes off, at which time
you've found the circuit with the offending draw. You then can find what in that circuit is
causing the problem.
If you're lucky, it'll be this easy.... a faulty diode in the alternator can cause a persistent
drain as can devices not served by the fuse block (e.g. headlights, at least in the earlier-
year trucks).
