I have a 250SD XLT SC SB ordered and it comes with the single CD player HU, etc. I am looking to replace the speakers at some early point and have read several threads re 6X8 and 6 1/2" speakers for the stock door locations. As time and money permit, I will be replacing the HU and putting in 1 or 2 amps and subwoofer(s). For now I am concentrating on some coaxial speakers as I can do that without my live-in GF/financial queen getting too wise.
I will be doing the install on my own, as I live in a true wilderness environment -- no audio shops. Is a 6 1/2" speaker a bolt-in or do I need to get/fabricate a kit? Any suggestions? I have used [XC brand?] waterproof/sound-deadening foam backing from Crutchfield in prior door-panel installations in my old F-150.
Of course, any great suggestions for speakers are appreciated. I've used Boston Acoustics components to spice up the GF's Toy 4-Runner but don't know that the stock HU will really push similar speakers while waiting for a new amp. I have pretty nice Pioneers in the F-150 fishing rig.
I did the same thing on my '99 super cab. There were no speakers in the back doors at all. Opened them up the wires the holes everything was there. Took all of about a half hour to install two new speakers.
The speaker size is 6X8 front and rear. Most places list these speakers as 5X7/6X8. I'm just about to change the speakers in my 2003 F250SD. I bought MB Quarts. I'll also be changing the HU to a Nakamichi MB75 6 disc in-dash single DIN cd player/changer. I do not have an amp yet. I want to see how everything sounds without it first. I'll post when finished.
Jimmy -- amazing that you are looking at the MB75, as I have been looking at that time and again with an eye toward putting it in as the next stage. I'll be curious how it holds up without or perhaps with an amp. I also had looked at the Quarts and today as I was looking narrower and narrower at some choices, a buddy let me hear his 6.5" Diamond Audio M5s in kick panels from Q-Logic [and a pair of 10" boomers in the back doors built into custom-made fiberglass boxes ]. He's got a Nakamichi MB100 feeding into a couple of Nakamichi amps. His taste in music sux but damn he;s got good ears! Now I have to worry about sneaking kick panels past the GF [who is sitting here next to me even as I stealth type this].
I like clean, crisp, and clear sound. I'm too old for huge subs and the like. I just bought a Nakamichi MB75 today. I've seen prices go from $350-$450 and higher. $375 to $400 seems to be the normal range. Have not seen one go for less that $350. From what I've heard from knowledgeable audiophiles, an amp with the MB75 makes a huge difference. I probably will install a Diamond amp. Only heard good things about them. I want to do the install without the amp as a reference to the difference with the amp.
I just installed a Alpine (4 channel/50 watts) amp and Infinity 5x7's in all 4 doors , total cost.. about 360.00. I kept the stock HU, sounds alot better than stock, although you won't hear me blocks away, it has a good sound for the $$ My 2 cents.
I have the MB DKD157. Great improvement over stock. No comparison. I'm no audio wiz, so the speakers are installed in the 4 doors in the same place as the factory ones. MB's fit fine. No trimming or anything. I wanted to put an amp in right away, but can't figure out which one. Don't exactly know what I'm going to need yet with the Nakamichi MB75. Love the MB Quarts though. I'll keep ya posted. Should be installing the Nakamichi next week. Amp maybe in a week or two.

I was going to use the Infinity speakers, too. Only reason I didn't was I got a fantastic deal on the MB Quarts. How do you like the Alpine amp? Seems like the amps are just what I need. How much and where did you buy it from? I'll probably buy an amp in the next week or so. Like you, I really don't need to be heard from down the street.

Well, fellas, my mind may be made up for me! Just found out the shipping costs for putting the truck on a barge in Seattle to get all the way out here [gasp!] ... try almost US$ .67/lb + 6% fuel surcharge. And that's only if I can get the dealer to remove anything that makes the truck longer than 19'4" [book says 19'3.4", but what about trailer frame hitch, etc.?]; otherwise the cost goes up another $900. Oh the joys of the last frontier! Wouldn't live anywhere else.
Well, got that off my chest and am back to breathing again without oxygen. The good news is that I have some trading material that can get me 2 pairs of NIB Infinity Kappa 572.5 5X7s from a buddy with a Dakota. Like you, Jimmie, I'm just gonna put them in the doors. PSDTech: any tips on install I should loook for?
Still not sure about how soon the Nakamichi MB75 comes along. May have to make do for now, but sure would like to stick in an amp. Has anyone had experiences, good or bad, with the Blaupunkt PA4100? It's a compact 4-channel 4X100 thing and it might become part of the speaker package [I have a rifle someone wants badly enough too negotiate]. One reservation -- there are apparently no speaker level inputs on the Blaupunkt; does the OEM single-cd receiver have line-outs or just the speaker level? If not, might have to look for something along the lines of the Alpine if/when I get a tax refund.
Rock Road, just pull your door panel off and remove the old speaker, install new one. The speakers I bought were direct replacements. The hardest part was to fish the new speaker wire through the rubber boot between the body and the door. Hope that helps, let me know if you need info to get door panel off.
