Drill press

For years I have been wanting a drill press, and I think I may finally be getting to the point where I will buy one. Trying to drill multiple holes in steel is such a pain in the *** with a regular drill and I always bend up my bits.

I've looked around a little- but not entirely sure what I need. Would a benchtop be sufficient? Should I look around and see if I can find a full size model? Although, one of those would be difficult to move around...

I'm kinda thinking maybe a Craftsman 10 or 12" benchtop model would suit my needs. Opinions?

It depends on what you'll use it for and how often you'll use it. I prefer the floor standing models due to the extra throat depth/height, but I use mine regularly for a pretty wide assortment of work.

Keep in mind also that the distance they give you is center of the post to center of the chuck, so you're going to actually have 1.5-2" less throat depth.
I would recommend an older used floor model. They are typically better built than the new stuff.
I have a Ryobi 12" benchtop that I wouldn't recommend for use even as a boat anchor.

Do not buy one from Harbour Frieght. The tables are made of white metal. Where I used to work, the boss told me to go buy a drill press from HF. He gave me the model # as he had "looked" at it. Went and bought it. As the guys were setting it up, the last part to put on was the chuck. Following the directions, they were press fitting the chuck when all of a sudden SNAP...the table breaks off. Chuck wasnt even on half way. I took it back, they wanted to give us a new one, I took the money and ran. Went and bought a Delta. No problems with it. And that was a floor model.
My dad bought a semi floor model (its bigger than a bench top, but shorter than a traditional floor model) at an auction years ago. I forget the brand(not a common name), but it is a good drill press.

Floor model. There will be a time the benchtop just won't be big enough. I've been using my Craftsman for 20 years, but if I need another, I'll find one on Craigslist.

i agree with the guys on a floor model.
and the older units are 100 times better then the new china crap sold all over the place these days.
look in the tools section of craigs list. you can find a real good older full size floor model drill press for less than the new ones cost.
