Yes, they are very rare. Only Ford called them a Flareside. GM had the Stepside.

1987 was the only year for a Flareside for the 1987 - 1991 models, and the very last Flareside to have steel fenders.

Looks like it's in pretty good shape. I'd like to have it. His other ad is a great looking truck as well. Though not as rare.

I've read that the reason they are rare is because in early 87 Ford used up the leftover 80-86 beds. Is there any truth to this or just speculation?

They only made them ONE year. That is why they are rare

Yes I know they only made them in 87, but I was asking if they were in fact leftover beds from the previous model. Not that important, just curious.

NO, they are not leftover beds from 1980 - 1986. The wheel arches on the 1980 - 1986 version were squared. The wheel arches for the 1987 were rounded to match the front fender wheel arches. The 1987 Flareside came with the same rear bumper, tail lights, and "chain up" tailgate as the 1980 - 1986 Flareside.

From 1988 - 1991 you could only get the Fleetside box. The Flareside was brought back in 1992, but it was different than the 1980 - 1986 and the 1987 version with a different tailgate, different bumper, and more integrated tail lights.

I could indeed be wrong, as I have never seen them in person, but I always heard the 1980 - 1987 flare sides referred to as "old style" Flare sides, and the later 1992 Flare sides were considered the "new style."

Those are cool. The beds aren't leftovers from 80-86 bucause the wheel well openings are different.

In 1992 they changed the beds again to the type below that have 100% fiberglass rear quarters, I just picked up this 1993 for $1,300 with a soft lower end knock.
Will be rebuilding the engine and doing a 4X4 swap under it.
I was told this truck was kinda rare because of the extended cab and flareside.

not sure how rare the extended cab/flareside option is,I have one also. It would be nice if ford would have kept records of how many of each model they made, but I haven't found numbers that are model specific.

Yes they are fiberglass. I have a 1987 F 150 4x4 Flareside, also have a set of earlier fenders that also fiberglass. I bought the earlier box for parts, then seen the fiberglass fenders are not the same. The 87's have a small flare above the wheel the others one don't
