We found the owner of the land and asked if he would sell it. His response was priceless.....he said, "yeah I guess so, but I don't know why you'd want an damned old car like that though".

We paid him $400, put some skinny old tractor tires on the wheels and attempted to pull it to the base with my friends late 80s Ford pickup. The 39 had no brakes, but the e-brake seemed to have a small amount of life left in it....I figured enough to gently stop it if we were being extra careful during the tow.
I say "attempted" because I found out too late that Al had never pulled a car with a rope before. We got out on the county highway and Al just starts driving as he would normally....around 60 mph!
I'm back in the 39 screaming my head off and waving my arms....trying to get his attention to make him slow down.....but no....he's got the radio on and is happy as a clam.
Anyway....we came to an intersection, and he drives right up to the stop sign and puts on the brakes. As you would expect, I pull as hard as I can on the e-brake and the 39 doesn't even begin to slow down. I slammed into the back of that Ford, probably going 40 or 50 mph, caved in his rear bumper and tailgate and sent the pickup hurtling out into the intersection.
But that wasn't the end.....as Al careened into the intersection, the rope got tight again and pulled the 39 back into the Ford, this time hitting it on the right rear quarter.
There was a couple of guys in another truck at the other stop sign laughing so hard after this scene that I thought they were gonna pee in their pants.
The Ford pickup looked like it had been in a demolition derby, but amazingly, that old 39 only suffered a bent bumper and a cracked grill.
I would've been laughing too (after I calmed down a bit), but I had just been in a 50 mph wreck in a 30's era Chevy and was pretty beat up.
It IS funny to remember now though....and Al....I NEVER let him live that one down.
