Check the ground from your battery to the motor. Unbolt it and clean it real good, then put it back together. I also added a ground strap from my throttle linkage bracket to the firewall for good measure. When you loose the ground, it really jacks things up.

Ah ha. Someone else to share misery with. I too have a 62/65 with a 400m in it. Lots of good advice here. Keep us posted with your progress. A multimeter is going to be your best friend.
