Is this a problem?

From time to time, when I start my truck it is very loud. This is very random and I haven't been able to link it with a certain condition, temp, etc. It's not struggling or performing poorly just very loud, cold days, hot days, doesn't matter. Someone please tell me that this is an engineered function of the engine and not a problem. Thanks for any input, I know this is the 6.2 forum so but for anyone that wants to ask...yes it is a 6.2 2011 xlt.

I was thinking fan too, thanks, but man is it random! If there's a purpose I would like to know it...

Not sure if its the fan or not, but I have remote start on mine. I have noticed from time to time, I walk outside, and I'm like HOLY *****!!! It is very loud. For me, I seem to have the "ticking" problem, which is very very pronounced in my case. I just purchased a canister purge valve myself because the dealer says the ticking is normal, but my research tells me otherwise. On that note, the TSB does not show up for my truck, but anyone who has heard my truck has been left scratching there head. Mine sounds like a header gasket leak when your driving it.

I am installing the valve tonight, ordered directly from Ford. I will post back with the results, but I would say at least half my "noise" is due to some serious tapping/ticking whatever the heck it is.

I left my 6.4 and ALLLLLLLL of its problems for this truck. So far, love the truck, but I just hope it doesn't become a sack of issues like the other one.

My first question was gonna be "what KIND of loud"? Roar, tick, what? Does it get louder when you get on the gas?

Roaring loud would be the best decription, and it follows the engine speed, meaning it gets louder as the RPMs go up. I don;t think it's a problem, I just want to know the whats and whys. Thanks for the input everyone...

It's the fan, and why it comes on I have no clue either. It's a loud whirring sound that ramps up and down the first 30 seconds or so of starting the truck. Mine was even coming on when it was below freezing so it must be part of a startup procedure the truck goes through.

Is the fan a regular mechanical (hydraulic) "clutch" fan or is it electrically controlled?

My '01 V10's fan does it sometimes too for no reason.

I think it must be Electric.. Mine comes on when starting cold- it seem to be a function of getting the motor to operating temp or something...

Your right.I don't own one,But I have been on a few test drives and the fan noise was one of my concerns.I was told that the fan will always run at first start up no matter what temp.It was said that it was designed that way to help get it up to operating temp faster.I don't know how a fan running and 10* outside will get the truck up to temp faster, but I also don't claim to be smart either.

It's the fan. I read somewhere that it comes on to help the engine get up to normal operating temps faster by placing the extra load on it.
