Oil Leak

I get oil leaking around the filter. It's almost like it sprays a little as it gets on the plastic molding right behind the top of the filter. It's not enough of a leak to notice between oil changes on the dipstick, but it is getting messy around the oil filter.

When I changed the oil & filter, added 14.25 qts (so as not to over-fill), confirmed the level several times on the dipstick as being ok, & wiped the molding down behind the filter. I checked it again at 1,500 miles, and there was again more oil on the molding - enough to wipe off, but not enough to drip.

I haven't cleaned it in a while now, and it has been accumulating around the top of the engine over time:

Any ideas on what might be causing this leak?

Thanks.

around the oil cooler possibly. unless its coming from the low pressure oil pump and the fan is spraying it but i doubt it. get a new oil filter housing because thats where the bulk of it looks to be coming from and start from there. my guess is its either cracked or the o ring under it is cracked

My best guess would be the blue turbo elbow hose has a small split in it. Sometimes very hard to see without removing it.

i agree in a way and not sure about it in another. that almost seems like to much oil for the ccv hose to put out unless the turbo has a oil leak in it and the blue hose is cracked.

I was reading about the replacing the blue hose, and will give it a try. There is about 70k miles worth of oil build-up on the engine from what ever is leaking. I will also give it a good cleaning, and see how she goes.

been like that for 70k miles?

I am curious to see whats causing this. I would also check the blue hose to the turbo, mine was leaking and it caused a mess under my hood over time, replaced it and powerwashed my motor and its been good so far.

Yeh - it has slowly been building up over the 70k miles. I will replace the blue hose, clean it all up, and post up results. I would get signs of oil spray near the oil filter head after 1,500 miles in the past.

I'm still sticking with CAC oil although it may be at the intake elbow also. Brake cleaner works miracles on nasty stuff like that--lol.

Are you sure it's not a cracked oil filter cap? It sure seems centered around that area.

It could have had a very small crack for a long time.

Also do you use OEM filters and replace the o-ring (lubed with oil) every time?

I will check the oil cap closely as well - thanks.

I generally use either Fram. Motor craft, or STP filters from Autozone. I always swap out the o-rings for new.
