Hey, I'm posting this here since this is the one forum where I actually trust people's opinions.
I'm trying to help my dad find replacement headlights for his late 80's/early 90's Freightliner semi . I think it has four 4x6.5 sealed halogen headlights. We probably want to stick with a halogen setup (No HID stuff), but I'm wondering if I get just a generic set of reflector 4x6 headlights, or if I can get a set of projector headlights (what most people think are for HID), and if they would provide better lighting than reflector types. It's a farm truck and doesn't see a lot of highway, so we need really good output for all the gravel/dirt roads he travels.
There are a lot of cheap garbage lights out there that have poor beam pattern, so research your choices carefully. What I would probably do is replace the headlights with the direct replacement Silverstars, and add on some off-road lights. Maybe three or four on the bumper below the grille, but mounting might be interesting given the tilt hood.
Yeah, unfortunately I know there's a lot of crap lights out there, and that's why I'm hoping somebody around the forums has some experience in this area. If nobody has any advice for me, I'll probably end up with either Silverstars, Hella, PIAA, or some other name brand replacement headlights. If that doesn't solve the problem, my dad's already mentioned getting round driving lights and cutting them into the bumper; it's old and rusty anyway so a couple of holes won't make a big difference anyway.
Silverstars would probably be your best bet. Then again, you could mount some Roo Lights from Jetco. Lots of drivers swear by them. Some even use them on highway, even though they aren't supposed to.
