new engine won't start.

I put my rebuilt 351w in my 76' f-100 last night and tried to fire it up.

all it would do is backfire,

does this mean that the distributer is 180 off? (when I would turn it clockwise It would stop backfiring and would just crank, when I turned it counter clockwise it would backfire while cranking.

I set the engine at tdc on what I thought was the power stroke and place the distributer so that the points were open and pointing to the #1 wire.

I carnked it 4-5 times for a few rotations,

Did I damage anything?

should I just flip the distributer around and try again?

thanks,

john

I don't think any damage was done. It sound's as though it is 180 out. Give that a try and let us know.

new engine won't start.

I am at work now but a friend of mine mesed with it and gave me a call to tell me of his progress.

he said that the swithched the plugs to a 302 fire order and it started but didn't want to run too well. (he said that it vibrated and he had to hold the throtle part way open.

new engine won't start.

my friend put it back on the windsor firing order and it fired right up.

I guess it was just starving for fuel before.

It is purring like a kitten now.

thanks,

john

Hmmmm.....if it's a 351W......shouldn't that be more of a roar than a purr?

hehe.......just teasing

Congrats on the rebuild.

Actually is is more of a roar.

Since there is no exhaust on it. just a pair of shortie headers then open air!!!!!

I hope this thing runs fast.........

It has 9:1 comp

stock heads/valves (porst cleaned up slightly)

0.030 over

com cams extereme energy 4x4 cam

roller rockers

mac 1 5/8" shortie mustang headers

wieland stealth intake

holley 4v

mallory dual point

2400 rpm torque converter

c4 tranny with street strip kit in it

3:50 limited slip rear end.

All in a beat up 76 f-100 (I have a perfect 79 but it only has 40,000 original miles on it so I couldn't bring myself to pull the 351m/c6, if it ain't broke don't fix it is my motto)

I will hopefully drive it to the exhaust shop this weekend (hopefully no cops see / hear me!!!)

new engine won't start.

yeah right, the cops all gave me thumbs up when I was driving to the exhaust shop with wide open headers. Nothing screams like a Windsor V8. How do you like that Xtreme 4x4 cam? I had it, then shipped it back in favor of a XE 250.

congrats on the rebuild!

TorqueKing,

So you are an E.I.T. also?

What field?

I am a highway and hydraulic designer.

Why didn't you like the cam?

I don't have the rearend done yet so I haven driven it yet.

It sure sounds crisp and revs up to 8,000 quicker than my brain can process it when I goose the throttle.

The only problem is that I need to adjust the rockers.
once I warm it up and rev it at 3,000 for 30 sec then goose it it almost wants to cut out at idle, it is loosing compression as the exhaust valve expands the it runs better as it cools.
