Transmision, Speedometer, ABS Light...Big Problem?!?!
The truck felt 100% normal to me, so I put it back on cruise and kept trucking to the next exit ramp just to check things out. All the breaking seemed normal (Breaks not sticking, no hot rotors, everything seems really normal. All fluids, break, tranny, oil, normal.)
So, I pull out towards the on ramp to continue heading home and I notice the following:
- Speedometer does not work in 1st and/or 2nd gear. Then, during the shift from 2nd to 3rd gear it jumps up from 0mph to 35mph and begins to work fine from there on out.
- Shifting from 1st to 2nd is very rough, but it does shift, it's just jerky. Much less so when I "ease it" through the rpms, more so when I just step on it.
- Other than the ABS light being on, the shift from 1st-2nd being rough, and the speedo not working until I'm ~35mph and shifting from 2nd-3rd, the truck seems completely normal.
- The Speedo/1st-2nd gear issue is completely repeatable.
- Oh, and the ABS light is staying on...
This is either going to be a simple sensor failure, or a cratered/cratering transmission...lay it on my fellas, I can take it.

Thanks guys. That was exactly my problem. A $24 sensor, and she's back to her old self.
(Note to all 1999.0 model owners....I went through three different sensors at NAPA before I found the right one. Take your old one in. It was not listed under VSS or any other transmission sensors (they will ask you "14 or 20 transmission pan bolts?", it does not matter) the part you need is listed under the breaks category. This might be obvious to many, but it was not to me, or my two local NAPA dealers.)
Thanks again Miller and Sesh, reps given.
