Wink '04 3.0 Automatic trans??

I'm still learning about the '04 Ranger Edge with the 3.0 and automatic trans that my Niece and her Husband bought their 17 year old Daughter for her first vehicle:
I'd like to ask what the prefered service method is on the trans either draining the trans itself (and IF the converter is drainable on it) OR having it flushed-I AM NOT A FAN OF FLUSHING-this truck has 120k on it and the fluid looks and smells pretty good but we'd like to service it, AND would we be correct in switching to a full synthetic Mercon V fluid in this unit?
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Sorry man, I've got a '95 with a manual tranny so I can't be of much help... All I can really say is check the dipstick - that should at least tell you what kind of fluid to use. Outside of that, go with the owner's manual.

Again, sorry I'm not the best help on the planet, but at least it's something, right?

Yep, You are right!! your response IS something!!
The fact you have a manual trans is good too:I am working on a '97 with a 4.0 and a 5 speed as well and am trying to beed the clutch on:truck has only 82k original miles and when I picked it up I had to mash the clutch into the carpet to get it into gear.I blead by just gravity first then by hooking up a hose into a bottle with fresh fluid like I do my brakes, its better but not quite comfortable enough. How cn I ceck to determine IF the master cylinder is bad or the slave cylinder? I hope its not the slave as I really don't want to pull the trans. Thanks for any suggestions

To be honest with you, I'm really not any kind of expert on transmissions. I would guess that if the slave was leaking, you would see fluid underneath the bellhousing, and if the master was leaking you would see fluid on the fenderwell.

Sorry I'm not much help, but I'll give it my best shot. Plus at least you got a bump up to the top where more people will see what's going on. Surely someone in here has more experience with this stuff than me...

Good luck,
Eli

Oh yeah... Someone helped me by posting this link in one of my threads. Hope it helps.

Transmission Fluid Change

I did a quick Search and here is a link you might want to review (change + fluid + automatic)

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...placement.html

Also, Haynes manual states Mercon V automatic transmission fluid. Routine fluid level checks are recommended every 3K miles and fluid and filter changes every 24 months or 24K miles.

An '04 tranny w/120K should be able to handle a full flush without incident.

A flush removes all the old fluid; dropping the pan and draining will only remove about 60% or so. There is no drain plug on the converter.

Mercon V synthetic is a fine choice.
