68 F600 idle problems

New to forum so please have patience.I have 68 F6oo 330 with motorcraft D2HF AA (2300G holley)that was recently rebuilt with modest kit. Before rebuild, truck had very rough idle and adj. screws had no effect on idle. After build,on road truck runs out well and while throttle is applied, but as soon as pedal is released, truck dies.Float level is correct and has new plugs, points, ect. Adj.screws will shut engine down when screwed all the way in,but do not seem to have much effect otherwise.Carb has 100.000 miles and throttle shaft has lot of play where it goes into carb body. Thanks for any help.

First, WELCOME to FTE!

If the carb shaft is loose in the body, there's almost nothing else you can do first before replacing the carb. Bushing it is possible, but I don't think it will be cost effective, it's cheaper to replace it with something from NAPA for instance.

When the shaft is that loose, any idle adjustments are pointless.

You MIGHT be able to find just the throtte plate/assembly somewhere, or find a used carb with a tight shaft and replace the bottom of the carb.

........
X2

And If that is fine allmost all holes on a holley are easiley cleaned.
Of course there are a few in the metering block that you cannot get a line of sight on. (becasue of the oposing 90 degree turns)I have run into a few where the best fix was a new metering block.

F 600 idle problems

Thanks for the advice about carb.I'm going to get in touch with NAPA now to see what they may have.I have not had a lot of luck finding one of these carbs.I have wondered why I couldn't put an ungoverned Holley on in place of this one and adjust linkage not to overrev.

Can anyone tell me what year models of 390 will interchange with my 68 330? It is 4 spd. with no power steering.I think it will be easier to change engine than find carb for truck.

You should have no problem throwing a 2bbl Holley on that engine.

Putting an FE in there presents some problems, none of which are impossible to deal with, but things like reusing the timing cover to keep the existing motor mounts, what motor you have (330MD vs 330XD) changes the crank snout size so the timing cover may or may not fit, etc.

NAPA is always a good place to start, according to many.

some of the larger speed shop places (jegs and summit racing)has the most parts in stock and a direct connection with holey carb company.
