In the course of installing a trailer brake controller in my Explorer, I came across a small momentary switch and an LED that looks to be wired to the PATS and/or OEM Ford remote starter modules buried in the left side of the dash panel.. Sometimes pressing the switch causes the LED to light, other times it doesn't. Some research told me that this is something to do with either valet parking or programming a key or fob.
Does anyone have any information on this switch/LED and how it is used?
This extra LED sounds indicative to me of an aftermarket security system. The extra LED and momentary switch would be pretty common to find on an aftermarket system. Have you checked underneath the dash and in the steering column for an extra box that doesn't have a nice loom of wires to it, but more of a bundle of discrete wires?
The momentary switches can often be used to put the system in valet mode, program features, silence the alarm if the fob is missing, damaged, or had a dead battery, etc.
