help with my bearings

I am replacing my ball joints on my 88 with manual lockouts. I recently purchased the truck and I could tell it needed aligned and this is the first step. I took off the tire, snap ring, retaining ring and lockout body. Then I went to remove the first nut. there seems to be something on the outside of the nut that prevents my "4 eared socket" from sliding over the nut. What is this and how does it come off?
I didn't have one of these on my 85 when I did it's ball joints and bearings. I was able to just remove the outer nut and proceed

Could it be the locking ring that goes between the 2 nuts? On mine there is a nut then a flat ring with holes in it that fits on a small tit on the inner nut with a small tab that fits into the groove in the spindle. After you remove it there is the inner nut.

is it the lock ring tab that goes between the nuts bent over? bend the tab up and the socket should slide on

85grey, does the object causing your issues appear to be a tiny steel pin protruding out of the face of the nut? If so, someone didn't line up the pin with the lock washer, torqued it down, thus pushed the pin through the nut. I got lucky and got mine off even though this was the case. I bought my socket at NAPA and it just barely worked. It took me several tries to get it to catch just enough to loosen it. When I finally got it off, I tapped the pin back in properly and made sure I installed it correctly.

Any body know where to get that washer with the pin? One of mine has the pin missing.

there seems to be a ring around the out side of the nut not the washer with all the holes that is behind it. I haven't loaded up a pic before but will try. The ring prevents my socket from fiting on the nut because it is flush with it. you will notice in the picture that a couple of the areas around the ring seem to squiggle?

It seems to be some sort of a locking ring I believe that I can see "teeth" behind the nut through the 4 places my socket should fit in. It seems like the three "squiggle" place seem to have a Roller in them that allows me to turn the nut freely about 1/4 of an inch

That's a different looking setup than I have. I have a D50 TTB. Is that a D44 TTB? It looks like you need the 4-prong socket where the prongs protrude out from the face of the socket... Does your socket look like this?

85grey---You have the spring loaded spindle nut that takes a dana 44, 4 prong socket. It will not have a lock nut. When it comes off it may seperate, but will slide right back together when you get it apart. I kind of like them as you can't overtighted them.
