sorry guys but this is my first ball joint job so if you could bear with me that would be wonderful. on my 1987 f-150 4x4 I am replacing the ball joints and on the upper ball joint after you remove the nut there is the camber adjuster thingy???? or an odd shaped piece still preventing removal of the top ball joint. my repair manual says I might need ford special tool #somthing. the trucks pretty rusty is there a way to remove this piece without the tool? does it thread off like the nut? any info from someone with more expirience than me would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys!
It's bound to the camber adjuster. You have to remove the nut on the lower ball joint first. If it still doesn't come free, thread the nut back on to the upper and whack it with a hammer.
I got the bottom nut loose and have been banging excessivly but the camber adjuster still wont budge. is there any specific place I need to hit?should it just slide off the threading?
You shouldn't be banging on the camber adjuster itself. You want to thread the nut back onto the upper stud upside down and bang on that. Eventually, it will come loose. You may need to try a bigger hammer.
Don't not put the nut back on - if you mushroom the stud with the hammer, it won't fit through the adjuster.
OK guys thanks for all your help some wd40 and screwing the nut back on and hitting it with the back of my handy dandy 12 pound maul loosened it right up. sorry to be bothersome some more but after re-assemble with the new joints I have a fairly noticable wobble in that wheel that seems to come and go. could my alignment just be real far off with the new joints or is it more likly i screwed up somewhere????
