1979 F100 Power Brake Upgrade ??'s

I recently purchased a very nice 1979 F100. It has a 302 and C-4. Unfortunately it does NOT have power brakes. After doing some research, I've found no "kits" for this upgrade.

My research shows there is a serial number split for the power brake booster in '79. My VIN is F10GPFA4979 making it the later model version. From what I've seen this version does not have the firewall standoff brackets or fulcrum set up like the earlier model. It appears to bolt directly to the firewall? If so, can I buy a rebuilt booster assy and just bolt it between the firewall and master cylinder? Is the pedal arm different in this case? If the pedal arm is different, will one from any other year truck work?

If it's not this simple or if the parts prove too difficult to locate, can a complete booster, bracket, fulcrum and pedal set up off of the earlier '79 or even '78 and older truck be installed without serious modification?

Any input would be much appreciated.

The truck does NOT have factory cruise control if that's a factor for the pedal arm.

When you figure out what you need, I have all of the pieces on a '76 F100 2wd. Booster worked when it was wrecked about 10 years ago, but not sure if it's still any good. But do have all of the brackets etc among other parts. If they will work, let me know............I'd make you a good deal on them.

Thanks, I may contact you about those parts if I don't find anything correct for the late '79.

I converted my 73 by finding a standoff bracket, and then I purchased a rebuilt booster from Autozone. Also, there was a slight difference in brake pedal. Mine had mnl stamped on it, so I picked up one that had pwr stamped on it. Not sure about the non standoff booster.

1973/79 F100 2WD: Manual disc brakes were standard equipment, power disc brakes were optional.

Y'all are aware, of course, that the brake pedal used with manual discs is different than used with power discs, and in this case there are THREE possible pedals.

1978/79 F100: D3TZ-2455-B .. Brake Pedal-Use with manual discs / Marked: D3TA-CA.

1978/79 F100: D7TZ-2455-B .. Brake Pedal / Marked: D7TA-LA / Use with power discs w/o speed control, 1979: before serial number DJ0,001.

1979 F100: D9TZ-2455-A .. Brake Pedal / Marked: D8TA-TA / Use with power discs, w/o speed control from serial number DJ0,001.

Are y'all aware why the pedals have ID numbers marked on them? Here's the reason:

1973/79 F100/350: There are TWENTY TWO different brake pedals, SEVEN different clutch pedals and NINETEEN different power brake boosters, I kid you not.

Without those pedal ID numbers, tryin' to figure out which pedal is correct for what application...would be a royal PITA!!!

See I did not know any of this! Thanks for the information...

As it stands, I have drums in the rear, and discs in the front, manual brakes.

If I want to go to a 4 wheel disc set up and power brakes, I assume I need a new proportioning valve too? Is there a "kit" or simple list of everything I need to do?

Mine is a '73 F100 2WD.

THANK YOU

Manual or power disc brakes makes no difference inre to the prop valve.

D3TZ-2B257-A .. Brake Differential Proportioning Valve.

Applications: 1973/74 F100 2WD w/disc brakes / 1973/74 F250 2WD w/disc brakes & single piston calipers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D5TZ-2B257-B .. Brake Differential Proportioning Valve.

Applications: 1975/79 F100/150 2WD w/disc brakes / 1976/79 F100/150 4WD w/disc brakes / 1975/79 F250 2WD w/disc brakes & single piston calipers / 1976/79 F250 4WD w/disc brakes / 1979 F350 4WD w/disc brakes.

I have no clue if swapping in rear discs will make a difference in the valve, because rear discs were not available in these trucks.

Thanks once again...I may end up sticking with the current setup of drums in the rear and discs up front, but converting to a power brake system. Then I can keep the proportioning valve I have, and also keep about $600.

It does make a difference and you will need to run an adjustable valve to dial in the pressure to prevent rears from locking by dialing pressure down..

Brake booster updrade

Did anyone ever figure out what you need to convert to power brakes? I have a 1978 ford f100 with manual style brakes.. I have been looking but have not found a booster with the necessary stand off... just the type that bolt directly to the firewall which I cannot use..

does anyone know if there is a bolt on booster out there that i can buy at a parts store?
